As for calling him off hours, I have kinda increased my resistance on that one. In the beginning, I might have called for stuff that I would never call about now, because I have learned coping skills and know what to expect from my disease over time. If you aren't there yet, then don't beat yourself up over calling him.
Always call 911 if you are going to suicide, or are thinking about suiciding.
If you start hallucinating, call your doc off hours.
If you cannot bring yourself out of a panic attack, call doc off hours.
Really, you have to do a gut check on it. If you can wait until the day to call, then you probably should wait. If you feel so panicky or anxious that you feel like you can't wait till morning, then call.
Here's what I do with my doc, but after years of experience:
1. I have something to take if I can't sleep (trazadone) which I rarely use.
2. I have Xanax for any anxiety that I cannot control with meditation (which I rarely take).
3. I have risperdal if I get hypomanic, which I take on an as needed basis.
But it has taken me twenty years to get to a point where I know when I am hypo, know when I need to take X, Y or Z.
So, if you can talk to your doc about preparing you for your typical symptoms, like not sleeping, or anxiety or whatever, and also get some therapy and learn some coping skills, I think that you will feel more at ease about treating your disease.
