TRIGGER WARNING
Romantics and wedding lovers, please use your mouse power now. Rough talk ahead.
I HATE FORMAL WEDDINGS. Even before they became symbolic of the divorce trauma ahead, I found them excruciatingly tedious and repetitive. I am not even comfortable at a bridal shower. At present there is not even anyone in my life who is.
My son's fiancee lives with us and is planning a formal wedding for October. I do not want to discourage her, but I am not doing well at setting my own opinions aside. My head knows it is not about me and wants to be supportive. My heart wants to throw up. I would rather drink a bottle of hair dye than talk about it.
HELP!!!

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Weddings today cost an average of 26,000 dollars...and HOW MUCH IS THAT A YEAR ?
But..it is HER day.....drink Pepto Bismol , take a couple of Xanax , and go with the flow.
Question...is she old enough to be paying for her own Wedding, or are you footing the bill ?
If you don't want to participate in discussing it too much then I wouldn't .. Can you find reasons to excuse yourself if the wedding chatter starts?
If you're asked why you don't participate more then I'd be honest.. It's not to hurt them but how you feel about weddings..xo
My future daughter in law is living with us part time and the wedding is in December. It is hard for me to drum up civility, much less any enthusiasm.
I am trying to keep my participation and level of commitment to doing any tasks related to the wedding to a minimum, partly due to finances and mostly due to physical and mental health issues.
I am still late in producing the names & addresses of the few people that I am allowed to invite to the wedding. I am getting nagged, because the "save the date" cards will be sent later than proper etiquette allows for.
Can you limit your participation?
Give your sincerest best wishes for a happy future. Ask the bridezilla to be to keep the wedding planning between her and the groom(and whomever) and to leave bride books in her room, because you want to be surprised at the nuptial affair.
in other words...keep your mouth shut and keep your opinions to yourself (unless you are paying for the wedding)
I for one am weary of constantly having the excitable bride needing to share with me every detail of everything nuptial on the nuptial I-pad.
Is that enounuptial?
I have all daughters and we've had a wedding and an almost wedding (daughter backed out 4 days before) in the last 12 months. I don't hate formal weddings at all. I like traditions and I like everyone getting together to support the couple as they move into marriage.
We provided our daughters' wedding budgets and then turned them loose to plan it as they wished. Fortunately, none were living underfoot so we didn't have to live it and breathe it 24/7.
My goal was to just show up and look cute. With your soon-to-be daughter-in-law living with you, I can see how it would be most difficult to escape. Any chance she can find other accommodations?
Rather than focusing on what you won't do or don't like, why not express your joy at their marriage (if you're happy about it) and offer to do what you're comfortable with. Once the names and addresses are gathered for the "Save The Date" you don't have to mess with that again. As mother-of-the-groom, there isn't a lot you have to do other than host the rehearsal dinner.
I hope you survive til October!! Good luck. I'm sure your son will appreciate your efforts. :)
