I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
I think sometimes, you have to look back at what you wrote to get some insight.
BiPolar Disorder is a Disease that can be impossible for those of us who have it to understand when we are first diagnosed....I was DX'd 29 years ago and there are still days when one minute I have my crap together and an hour later its just gone, emotions are in overdrive, stress is through the roof, and I don't have a clue what unraveled everything.
The thing with people who don't have BiPolar is that they have absolutely No Way of understanding what it is, what it puts us through, what it takes to live with it every damn day, how often we have to change gears throughout the day or week, how emotions can change very quickly. This is not an easy Disease to understand and it's not one that you can just learn about on the Internet and know about it.
The thing we have to remember is they never will. They've not walked a mile in our shoes, they cannot understand what we live with or go through. We have to figure out how to not expect them to.
I don't think that people think they're better than we are, I think they just don't know how to understand it, how to react the "right way", if there is a "right way".
Emotional/Mental Illness/Diseases are very different from Medical Diseases.
I don't know who you're trying to get to understand your BiPolar, for me, I realized that you can't make everyone get it. You have to pick and choose the people that are most important in your life that you really need in your support system and help them the most. For me that was my spouse, sons, and MIL. The way they learned how to understand was I arranged a family Session with my Pdoc so he could talk to them and explain how things were, how the medication worked, how important Therapy was, why In-Patient stays were sometimes needed. They could ask him all the hard questions, because he knew the best way to answer them so it was understandable...
I think that if you take your key support people to a Session with your Pdoc and let him explain how this all works and how difficult it is to live with all of the changing emotions and things we have no control over, it can be very helpful.
Now if your talking about the general "normy" population and you think that they all think they're better than we are, that's something that you'll have to work through and get out of your head. Those are all strangers, who cares what they think.
I have time to give to my sons, to give to my job and my employees, to give to my S.O. and some left to give to myself. I don't have time to give to all the idiots in the world that have preconceived ideas about Mental/Emotional Disorders, they are not my problem...and they shouldn't be yours. I also don't go around announcing my Medical and Mental Illnesses to people, my life is my business, not everyone else's in the world.
Take care,
Kat
This is a good place though to make friends who will get you..... Big hug.....xo
For as treatable as this disease is supposed to be, it's still destructive as hell. And it's going to damage or even destroy relationships. It's going to make it hard for a lot of people in your life to be willing to ride it all out with you. It sucks. But like Kat said, you have to pick and choose the people that are the most worth it and really work with them to help them try to understand. I'm sorry life with BP disorder is so hard and there are no easy answers.
Good luck and take care.
