Valproic acid & nightmares

I started valproic acid (a version of Depakote) a few weeks back. 500mg twice a day so 1000mg total per day. Has anyone experienced nightmares or very vivid dreams when taking this? 


I'm struggling with nightmares and getting through the night without waking up countless times.

I think all antipsychotics and mood stabilizers can cause nightmares and very vivid dreams. They do for me. I can feel, taste, and smell in my dreams. Be careful with the valproic acid, I used to be on it years ago (2250 mgs) and my hair started falling out...hair on my head, eyelashes, nose hair.

I didn't see it in side effects.... I would ask your pharmacy.... they'll have the answer if it's Epival or another one of your meds if you're on more then one

I liked it but my hair went really really curly and the fear was it might fall out.... I wish you well on it.... Big hug..... xo

Yes it can cause abnormal dreams...

Thank you so much for the replies. My hair is already starting to fall out significantly. Luckily I have a lot of it but that’s something I’ll be discussing with my doctor as well in my next appointment

If your hair is falling out I would call your doc and stop it... You can lose all of your hair!!

I was put on Tegretol after Epival due to the curly hair and it's been good for me.... Big hug....xo

    Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
