disclosure is a really personal choice. I usually disclose to some extent. One reason is that you might be able to get accommodations to be able to maintain a job under the ADA. The other reason for me is that it lets others see someone with a mental "illness" functioning on the job..... reduces some stigma......not all, but some. Oh, and the other reason is that it lets them know that I'm not going to tollerate any stigmatization.

But I only disclose after I have a job offer not before.

I never disclose. The only thing I say is that on a certain day of the week, I have to leave a little early for my standing doctor's appointment. I just say I have a chronic medical condition. If they try to dig further, I say I suffer from depression, not Bipolar. Depression definitely does not have the stigma that BP does. Some just won't get it. Ever. Now, if you get a job and the time comes to get insurance set up, at my last job I had to list my meds and my disorder. So the Office Manager eventually found out. It didn't change anything. Thank God. But every office is different so don't tell them. That's my advice.

I wouldn't disclose before I accepted a job. But I tend to be pretty open with colleagues (not necessarily my boss) and will disclose to closer work-friends.

I am open from the start. I tell them I have bipolar disorder, that I have weekly therapy, give them a list of my required accommodations, and ask if they have any questions. I am sure this has hurt me with some positions, but I do not want to work for someone who can not tolerate it.

I would never have considered disclosing to a potential employer and I would never again disclose to an actual employer.

I made the decision to disclose to my current employer so that they could meet their responsibilities under Australian OHS legislation (companies are legally required to provide a safe work environment). I've regretted it ever since. On the occasions where I have had to raise concerns that work issues were having a negative impact on my mental health, my concerns have consistently been dismissed, and I no longer feel confident that I can discuss these issues without incurring some form of penalty.

I wont be disclosing to any employer in the future.
