I just received the telephone bombshell that my father doesn't have lung cancer we don't think as we had worried but almost had a lung collapse while getting a biopsy and probably has prostate cancer.
I'm freaking out. I know parents die. I know my father is 70. But I'm just very worried about him.
We had a very good long talk and are excited to spend the holidays together. I imagine this is going to be some really intense family time as I don't know how much time I have left with my father.
That and we are prepping for Thanksgiving. This is going to be really intense. I'm spending M-F at my parents house and helping my mother shop and cook Thanksgiving dinner. I love to cook and Thanksgiving is the cooking Olympics but I am out of practice.
Then there's Thanksgiving dinner. This is my first sober Thanksgiving family dinner. I don't know how much drinking there is going to be. I just re-invited my boyfriend who I had de-invited for the two weeks we were broken up. My dad's bipolar cousin Mark is coming with a family he lives with. My dad is probably dying. This has all the makings of either a great time or a magnificent shitshow.
I just don't know what to expect. All I can do is cook all the things. Any advice for navigating this? Thanks so much guys.

Prostate cancer I read is the slowest growing cancer in men. In my dads case, the doctors were on top of things, caught it early. They catch protrate cancer by blood tests looking for elevated PSA levels.
My dads case, his protrate cancer was encapulated. .meaning the cancer did not spread.
My dad now has to take homone shots every 3 months I think .
Let me know if you have any questions, then again I am not a doctor..lol but I learned alot through sheer panic and concern.
Chris is right on - this type of cancer is slow growing, quick to be detected, and easy to get rid of. My dad didn't even need chemotherapy!
On a happier note, your thanksgiving plans sound delicious! I couldn't spend 5 days with my mom - I'm good for 2 - at the most. We always go to my husband's grandmother's house BUT it looks like this year, we'll be going to my sister's house - what fun!!
I'm here if you ever want to chat . Try not to worry too much about your dad just yet - I know that's easier said than done, but wait and see what the docs have to say and then you'll have a much greater sense of exactly what's going on. Big hugs to you!
