Questioning my diagnosis.....

After telling my parents about my diagnosis, they don't think that I am bipolar. They think that maybe I am ADD with clinical depression. Has anyone else ever gotten this reaction? I just don't know if I should think this or not. I am fairly new here, so I don't know what to think about my diagnosis. Could this be a possibility? Thoughts?

Do your parents practice psychiatry? Well, then...nuff said.

Ask a professional - say you're uncertain about your diagnosis and you just want it clarified. Your psychiatrist is the one treating you, not your parents, so it really doesn't matter WHAT they think except for how it affects you.

I agree with spacekat. Do you think that your parents are in denial? Are they affected by the stigma attached to mental illness, esp bipolar illness? It sounds like it would be a good idea to have a meeting with them and your pdoc.

yes, it is possible you have been misdiagnosed. If YOU are unsure then get a second opinion.

I think a lot of family members (mine anyway) are in denial. It's just too difficult to accept. You are their baby no matter how old you are and they have accepted that you are sometimes reactive but the label bipolar is frightening to them. I agree with fish, get a second opinion if you have any doubt.

My mom, to her dying day was convinced that with me it was just a matter of nerves. She said Just Calm Down!

I have sought out different opinions over the long years and nobody can agree. Which has made me obsess over all my different diagnoses. I do not recommend worrying. I do recommend sticking with meds that work for your symptoms, therapy only if it helps you, and reaching out to peers who understand.
