Part XV...Let me first explain the title of this blog. Its connotation is derived by different names for criminals however the meaning I'm going to give it is the following; Crooks (people who are sick), Conmen (anyone trying to make a dollar from them).
Just after I got married to my love Maria in the Philippines my life started flashing before my eyes over the next week or so, this combined with me reducing my medication led to another major episode. I was getting little sleep and started reading the bible getting different ideas of reference from it and I was beginning to hear voices again. Once again I got lost in this world, losing insight into my condition and succumbing to the false reality that was caused by my hallucinations.
My wife got scared for her safety for I was out of control even though I never hurt her physically I began to scream and shout at her causing her emotional grief. I knew my mind had gone, and I wanted to be stable. In the bible I had read about unwanted spirits and if I declared that Jesus was the only begotten son of God then these spirits wouldn't dare come near me. I got my wife to declare this and to repeat it. Looking back this must have been terrifying for her.
Whilst on the toilet I burnt the middle of my palms and the front of my ankles trying to snap out of it and try and feel some sort of pain, also thinking about how much suffering Jesus would have had when he was nailed to the cross. I was really symbolizing his crucifixion.
My memory is a bit bleak but by the next morning my wife, unknowns to me, had packed all her stuff and moved to her mothers.
This made me worse for I didn't know where my wife was and I thought she has been taken by God, or even beamed up to another realm, much like what Scotty does in Star Trek.
I was so confused, I spoke to my Dad and he told me to take all the medication I had to try and sleep. I took all my Seroquel and injected myself with 50mg of Flupenthixol, the last vial I had of the medication. The anti-psychotic takes a few weeks to take full effect, but due to me not being completely going off it, my flashbacks started subsiding and my normal sense of reality started setting in. But whilst this was happening a few things happened to me.
I was staying at our residence in Mandaluyong where we a planned to stay for 2 months, almost 6 weeks in I started having problems with security. First they complained that I was smoking on the balcony when I know this was permitted by my landlady. Security tried to say it was a common area, but it was a private balcony and there was nothing they could do to prevent it. Due to this security started keeping a close eye on me.
I tried going for a swim and going to the gym but after all that I was still concerned about my wife. I went to the entrance of security to ask if anyone had seen my wife and no one could tell me what had happened. I kicked up a bit of a stink. I ended up knocking on neighbours doors and no one spoke English that well and basically kept their distance.
I got back to my apartment and for some reason I put my wallet in the freezer, thinking to hide it. I hid it so well that I in fact forgot altogether that it was in the freezer. A few hours later after a nap I got up and realised I didn't have my wallet. This made me panic I grabbed my keys, phones and cigarettes and took my nicobate (for I had no money for smokes)) and tried to use the elevators. I had no idea where I was going or what I was doing, just going in and out of elevators, up and down to different floors.
The next thing I know I was in an elevator with security and a few other young men. They took me to the basement where there was a car waiting. I thought they were just kids going for a joy ride so I just went with it. Whilst in the car I was trying to talk to the lady in the front passenger seat and the driver trying to understand what they were saying.
I tried to direct the driver to go to Antipolo where I thought my wife's mother lived to see if Maria was there. The next thing I know they stop and tell me to get out of the car. They all surround me and some men came out of a locked gate and asked me to come inside. I was scared, I thought I was being taken underground (which indeed I was).
I convinced them to let me a have a cigarette before I went in. There I was in an office and they all tried co-hearse me to go through a door to go out the back to have lunch. A lady who was half Filipino/Australian told me she was from Australia and I thought I could trust her. Every door I went through there was a lock, so every time I progress to the next room a key would be turned. I had no way out. I finally get to the lunch room where I had a pork and rice dish.
After lunch some of the people that were in the car with me were still there. I was keeping track of who was where. Whilst eating lunch in a locked room with all these other people I noticed a staircase leading up to a cell door. At that door there were all these people crowding round.
Dad had told me about these places where you would get locked up in overcrowded rooms with no where for privacy and there would be a smell of urine and feces. I had convinced myself that I would not go up there. The Filipino/Australian woman tried to tell me to go upstairs where there was a bed waiting for me to sleep, but I told her I was not tired and wanted to go back to my residence. They didn't reply instead she left the room and went to the kitchen (through another locked door).
They cleared the table and there was a basketball hoop there where everyone began playing basketball. I joined in. Still watching who was where. At some point I realised I wasn't getting out. I also had my passport on me and I handed that over along with my keys and phone.
Soon the moment of truth arrived. They demanded I went upstairs and I refused. One bloke tried to force me to get up but I remained seated. The next thing I know 5 "heavies" came from down stairs and grabbed me, one grabbing me in a headlock chocking me, while the others grabbed my legs and and handcuffed me. They tried picking me and took me to the bottom of the stairs. As the guy was chocking me I heard a friend of mines voice say "swear to God". Through the chocking I spoke these words. The next thing I know they took the handcuffs off me and made me stand up.
I had no choice but to start to ascend the stairs where it lead pass the cell door.
Upstairs I passed about 8 beds where they brought me to a room that had one bed a toilet and a tap. A few people walked into the room and out another cell door before locking that too. I had no idea where I was. I checked out my surroundings and soon realised there were two doors to my cell. There was a window that had been boarded up but wasn't secured. On the other side of the window was the street where the car initially dropped me off. Through the other cell door I could see another room that was vacant. The four walls consisted of my cell, another door to the outside world that was also locked, another wall with a door leading downstairs that I thought lead further underground but later found out was the initial office I was in, and the fourth wall had a windows and that had two more beds in it where two young women were staying, one having a striking resemblance to my wife and at the time I couldn't make out whether it was her or not.
After everyone left and I was trapped in this cell room by myself , I got handed a letter from my wife and some spare clothes and a container of biscuits from one of the workers there. I read the letter which explained what happened. I had basically been placed in "Homecare' Which was a makeshift mental ward in the Philippines.
