In the interests of dialogue, I'm posting an essay I wrote for the Canadian website Queer Mental Health about the mentally ill and guns:

Give it a read if you have a moment and comment how you feel about guns and bipolar people. Personally, i just want to stay away from guns, but others especially in rural areas where hunting is big might have different views.
I'm very curious as to what you guys think.
BTW, the essay is just about mentally ill people, not queerness, so don't worry about not getting if if you're straight.
Also, if you are LGBT and bipolar, Queer Mental Health: http://queermentalhealth.org is always looking for writers. You can do it under your own name or a pseudonym. I've been writing for them for 3 years and it's awesome. It's a great sounding board to do armchair activism and add to the dialogue about issues I and these two intersecting communities deal with.

More laws are NOT the solution. Criminals will NEVER respect them. In Northern Ireland the 'Troubles' have created a Victim Class governed by PTSD.
All I'm trying to say is that there are more underlying issues at play here, the Gun is merely a symptom.
The editor's a cool as hell married trans woman in Canada who doesn't enforce deadlines and is really fun to talk to on Facebook chat. Queer Mental health doesn't pay, but most writing guys don't. It's a great way to get your voice heard.
Even without the pay, writing for QMH would be rewarding to me just because it's involvement with the two things that matter most to me - queer issues and mental health issues.
