I think this is aimed more at issues around physical damage to the brain - it mentions Altziemers and brain injury. It also mentions the brain/ computer interface which I guess is along the lines of the robotic arms or communication via computer from locked in syndrome people.

Bipolar seems to be more the chemical environment of the brain.

But all information is useful and who knows what might appear.

Your right they don't mention bipolar or autism or anything along those lines.. I was just trying to be optimistic that maybe in the process of mapping the human brain they can reveal the information to the drug companies to expand on the chemical aspects but who knows.. I just hope some progress comes out of this.

Well, nick, that was my hope when I first heard it, or at least that they would explore definate markers for diagnosing BP. I think any research we invest in can lead to better understanding of the brain, which eventually opens other doors. xo

I think the advancement in this case comes from someone getting 100M. According to my understanding, work on brain mapping is fairly advanced already. I think the best thing the President can do with the money is to give it to surviving family members of victims of drone strikes.

My pdoc was trying to cheer me by predicting they will have gene therapy for bipolar within 20 years. I said yeah right I'll believe it when I see it. He also said that no government is bankrolling the research, its all private companies doing it for profit.

It really bothers me that all medical advances ride on the back of torturing animals and trialling drugs on poor humans who sign up to be guinea pigs.

I wont read it ..........however when ever I hear of all this money going for new research when my SSD check barely covers basic living expenses and they threated medicare and social security and military pay I wonder where is this extra money coming from when I and just about every other disabled person I know is one rent payment away from being on the streets? so you tell me which is better funding a research program that will never benefit people for years and years or keeping the people now in homes and on meds and feed.

Usually I am all for medical research of any kind, however, I do believe in this case that is way too much spending on one area. It's just like any budget. Split the funds accordingly. They claim Social Security is going bankrupt and I don't know how when working people pay into it. It's crap if you ask me. Isn't medical reform more important at this point in time? Don't get me wrong, I again do support medical advancement, but not at this time when so many other reforms need to be addressed. It confirms my dis-faith in our government.

I think 100M is nothing when 1 stealth bomber costs 2.2 billion.. I am just happy seeing funds going into research for health other than just the war machine.

SS is going bankrupt because they keep using it to pay for other things. that was not suposto happen.

KatLin I wouldn't worry about SSDI running out of funds there is WAY to many people relying on this it would cause way to much panic.. We print money out of nothing the way it is.. That's all that would happen.. Boys strike up the printing machines.. lol

I do agree entirely on research. I am a huge backer of science, however the timing is horrible. I don't agree with spending 2.2 billion on a war machine either. There are a lot of things I don't agree with. But that's a different topic, ha.

i think enough of us here have personally dealt with the heartbreak of alzheimers (s/p?) of loved ones to see the need for far deeper study.

Understanding the brain is one thing. Fixing it, not so much. We get old, our brains decline, we die. Doubt to see a change sadly.

I agree with the others that the money would be better spend on current sufferers of brain troubles.
