My Father Doesn't Care About Me

My dad is a work a holic.  He's always working on something.  When it comes to me,  I'm almost always put on the back burner.


He seems to care more about his live in girlfriend and her family's problems than his own family.


He called me on my birthday and when he gets around where I live, he will drop off a present for me.  That was on October 9th and he hasn't showed up yet.  He called a couple weeks ago asking if my son and I want to something before Thanksgiving because he had a party to go to Thanksgiving night.  I said that would be great.  It's almost here and I haven't heard from him.  My son is very disappointed.


He always does this to me.  Making empty promises.  I don't do that to my son.


I not sure why my dad avoids me.  It could be because I have bipolar disorder or that I'm not successful like my younger brother.  Maybe he wanted me to be a boy too.


It sucks to be me.

Ummm...I"m assuming you have a phone, have you called him to say, "hey dad are we still getting together before Thanksgiving?" It sounds like he stays pretty busy, and some parents view adult children differently and don't always call as much. You may have to do some initiating to stay in touch.

Agreed with Kat. He hasn’t called but neither have you so that’s something you can do. My siblings don’t always get in touch regularly with me. But if I reach out they make time to talk. Try that and let us know what happened me.

I have to agree with what the others have written Jennifer..... I can hear that you're hurting and I'm sorry that you are

If he tends to get consumed by too many things at one time.... When you talk to him again I would ask him "lets make a specific plan so we'll follow through"

And I would suggest that you both mark it on the calendar

Can you go to visit him??

Sorry you are having issues with your dad. I also can have issues with my dad. I am sure your dad cares about you though. Most parents care about their kids. Try giving him a call? Maybe he got distracted? Try to keep an open mind.

I called my dad. He said maybe we will do something on Saturday. We'll see.
