She kept a roof over my head, food on the table, and years of therapy for her constant nervous breakdowns, depressions, and general neglect. Every time I see her, it takes more therapy and I'm reminded by her of how sick she is but can still work while I worked for approx the same amount of time but am on disability now. (I started working (babysitting at 11 and only stopped last year so that's a good 29 years of work compared to my mom's 19). It's a slap in the face of the years I took care of her and took her to the hosp and took care of my brother. After being diagnosed, my dreams of a family died and I blame her. She should never have had children and I'm ill and my brother puts his emotions in a box just to survive. Mother's day is probably the worst day of the year, next to father's day. My father was a piece of work but at least he had the brains to get out - left when I was 3. It takes a special person to have bp and still be a good parent. And then there are the lucky ones who have "normal" parents who give then support and structure. My mom is a shell and I dearly miss today the mother of my wife who gave me the honest love and care for awhile that I'd never had. Miss her every day. But somehow my brother and I have managed to carve out fairly normal lives for ourselves, even with the constant turmoil, neglect, and uncertainty of our childhoods. It just takes constant work.

with the power of the human mind you wonder why there can possibly be a such thing as a shitty mom, bp or not, but they do exist.

Von, don't take this wrong, but I love you man! Think you're cool as hell too and you said exactly what I needed to hear. Considered yourself bear hugged! (Serious sniffle!) Sure there's tons of others out there like me, survivors who go on to make lives for themselves. Serious props to all of them and hugs to all the brave bp moms who are working so hard to be great moms to their kids. You are inspirational! You show there's not only one way!
