I would like to say I never found the right cocktail but my p-doc knew way more about the meds and combos than my Reg.docs.

I have yet to find the right combination of medications yet however, I will state that all the psychiatrists I've seen understand me moreso rather than any GP. My GP in fact, before I was ever under a psychiatrist made some bad moves medications wise. A psychiatrist is truly the best route.

pdoc definitely.

most MDs wont even touch psychiatric meds

Regular MDs won't prescribe me meds unless it's an emergency and they give a refill to a current med. I would never rely on an MD for my psych meds. My brother is a doctor too but he says flat out that most MDs have not studied psych meds enough to be good help.

Pdoc definitely

It was my pdoc who found the rigt med for me. My regular doc just wanted to give me seroquel because it was the most popular bipolar drug and she was not willing to change when it caused me to become suicidal.... I swithced to a pdoc and while it did take years to find the right med she was much more knowledgable about the different ones as she has tons of patients using them.

My neuro does my prescribing for my BP meds - last pdoc was ignorant beyond words and was alot of the reason for my last run in with the law. He got fired that night and I was done with the entire issue of having a pdoc

Deff Pdoc.

Most MD's aren't versed in the subtle differences in Bipolar meds, and how they treat different aspects of the disorder...that's why so many of us are on a lot of different meds...each med works on a different part of the brain.


MD is who gave me Paxil, never took a back ground on me, didn't ask about my mood swings...Paxil sent me into psychosis.....this is why we BP's really need a Pdoc , rather than a MD(General Practice)

My GP specialises in mental health & works with my p.doc. so she is pretty good in emergencies.However my p.doc. has studied psych meds. so I trust her over my GP.My p.doc. is better at finding the right combo.

ty everybody ive been workn wth my md and hes just decided he wants me to see a p-doc so i go the 8th...my meds are doing ok but i think they still need a lil tweeking

Nurse practitioner, believe it or not. She was great! But I moved, so we have to start over. Such is military life. In general, I have had more understanding and willingness to try new things from Pdocs. Hope this helps.

Pdoc. I actually have a pdoc who specializes in bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, she's leaving her practice next week.

That's frustrating RITkat - seems like just when I start to like a pdoc or therapist they transfer out, quit, or die and I have to start all over a million times telling same story to a person I may or may not click with.
