Living on my own?

I live at home. I shared an apartment with my step sister once and it ended very extremely badly. My drug addict boyfriend almost lived there with me and we decided I should go off my medication and I became psychotic and did some weird unacceptable things and ended up in hospitals and so on. It was a very bad.. the worst time for me.

So I've been living at home for a year and a half since then and right now I'm considering moving out. I'm 23 years old and I feel like I'm not living my life.

My friend Sydonee lives in a little city near the big city and she wants me to move close to her so we can hang out more. That sounds great, and I'd be near school and other friends. I could also set up a painting station and be able to paint more and just.. have my own space.

Money might be tight, but also I would be leaving a great support system that is my family. I guess I'm breeching the decision to live on my own, but I don't know if it's exactly here yet.

Does anyone have experience with food stamps, the section 8 voucher, and or being on SSI/SSDI while living on your own?

Im on SSDi and I was one of the fortunate ones that got approved on the first try. It takes most people months sometimes years to get approves. If you are thinking about moving out, I would start the process of applying now to see if you can get it. There are also lawyers who specialize in these cases. As for food stamps and SEc 8, I am not sure what state you are in so I cant be much help there. Its a big step to live on your own. Just be sure you are ready!

I agree with Jenna. While living with family can be stressful, going out on our own can be just as or more stressful and if we make the transition before we're ready physically, mentally and emotionally we run a high risk of failure and that's usually a big setback. I'd do a lot of planning before cutting loose.

Thanks guys,I think you're right. I'm actually on SSI/SSDI at the moment and my case worker said she'd help me out on getting Section 8, but the most important thing is being ready to actually live by myself. My sister thinks it would be great if I applied to a 4 year college and lived at school and that would be a good transition. I think that's a good idea. I just have to get my act together with school and figure out what exactly I want to do.

This is a HUGE step for you and I think you can do it. I am so proud of you. Section 8 can take years to get, depending on where you live. I have not persay lived on my own since getting disability, but I do help pay all the bills with my check. It leaves me about 120 left over for coffee and soda money.
Food stamps are another story, They seem to be really easy to get. Just bring your statement of benefits in and your ID and your address and what bills you help pay, etc etc. You should be approved in a few weeks.
