Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

this is a subject that I been think about for awhile. I was taught to take care of myself. over the years I had learn to rely on myself because I didn't have anyone I could count on around. Of course I was also told I should help others which I do. Looking at my life now, I'm a 45 yr old, widow with a 16 year old son who I also take care of as most mothers would. I love my son dearly and would want the best for him within reason. I love my father dearly, also. He is such smart, hardworking and caring man. When someone and I are making a decision on something like what to do for the day, what to watch on tv, what's for dinner, etc. I generally go with what the other person wants because it seems like the polite thing to do. Also, for me those things usually aren't worth getting into an argument about. Yes I've been called a "push over" and "weak" by more dominant people for this. I think I'm just picking my battles.
What I'm getting to is that since I'm middle age, my health has declined a lot over the years. Recently, my doctor was very concerned with my heart rate and some lab test that came in. I will see her on monday to discuss the lab results. I'm not scared for myself because my whole life has been hard and to be honest I've looking forward to my passing. I know that sounds awful. I've had suicidal thoughts of course but I come here or call a hotline to get me past it. The part I feel guilty about is leaving my family behind and how sad that they would feel. Even if it were some sort of accident or natural causes it would be them I feel bad for.
I feel I am living for other people. I don't really know how to live for myself. As a mother, I figure living for their children is what mothers do.
All I can do now is live one day at a time loving my family and the few friends I have near and far. I only have 1 friend nearby. My other friends had moved or became far away when I moved. I keep in contact with them on FB.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Ruby's post about knowing (and Getting) our needs met, addresses a lot of what you are talking about, because a Lot of us tend to be over-sensitive and therefore we Do 'consider what the other person wants", for Many reasons....but then we don't feel we are "someone worthy of getting what We want", and we end up giving what I have called "back-handed gifts" -
We offer ourselves, our time, our money, our stuff, our strength, but we Obviously aren't always happy about it and we end up being Sure the other person(s) Knows we are not happy about it. Then, of course, we feel rotten because the other person Does see we're not happy, but we're Not happy. Yet we Insist on 'doing', or Giving, because we feel guilty if we Don't.
Gotta sort Out all these feelings. Urgh. Did you read ruby's post?

I hear you about friends. Everyone seems worlds away right now, but I sure am grateful for the lovely folks here.
Smile as you say this and if they argue say "Fine, you get your salad and I'll do my steak." . Its not difficult, but it can lead to painful conflict at times. But no pain, no gain. And if we fail to love ourself properly, then depression creeps in to ask us why?
We must love ourselves first - or at least try. It's so hard sometimes. But there is also good in the world - good that we don't want to miss. I too am a mother (of a 14 yo boy) and I live for him. But I must also include myself in there. Taking time to do little things for me. Just like you should do -- find time to treat yourself because YOU are important TOO!
Our lives aren't all about others however I think it's important to take others into consideration
I'm sorry you're struggling with some health problems Jenn... I hope that Monday will go well... Please let us know... You are in my prayers...xo
