also wanted to add that i have had diarrhea non stop and have lost about 4lbs in water weight in a 36hr period.....

Hi there, if you have existing hypothyroidism I have been told lithium should not be prescribed. I've had hypothyroidism for 20 years and have never been allowed it. I hope you get some answers on Monday! Take care of yourself and get some pedialyte (yes for kids) to drink so you don't get dehydrated! Sending over good thoughts.

Oh wow. I have hashimoto's disease so yes, hypothyroidism. WTF... it's suppose to say this on my medical records! What should i expect next if she takes me off it (which she will because i cant handle it) ?

I have Hashimoto's too. I have been on seroquel for many years and it's worked ok, just weight gain. I'm sorry you are going through this right now. Hopefully you'll get a new prescription for an AP to help with the mania. I would ask to get your thyroid levels checked too to see if a dosage change (presuming you take synthroid or something similar) is needed. Hang in there! You will be okay.

I take seroquel but only at night to help me sleep. Honestly the only thing they have given me so far that helped any was klonopin and it only helped a little bit so they switched me to valium and it had no effect at all. They didnt give me anything else besides the lithium..I am almost out of choices now. I am going on monday to have my thyroid check but it is an order by my endocrinologist. I already was not absorbing my synthroid suddenly for some reason so she switched me to tirosint. I'm shocked, i'm pretty sure i told my psych at the appointment that i was a thyroid patient. I'm starting to get a headache now. Dangit. Thanks for your advice!!

I really am sorry you're going through this. So good you're getting thyroid checked Monday! Who knows why these docs overlook stuff...but the good news is you'll get some help soon. Hugs!!

I have hypothyroidism and I've been on Lithium for 30 years.
In fact, Lithium is what gave me hypothyroidism. But it works great for my mood swings and I now take Levothyroxin so I feel fine.

Yeah, dobie I have met others who have told me the same thing...that lithium resulted in thyroid deficiency. But I guess it's different if you have pre existing hypothyroidism.....at least that what about four different docs have told me!

What other meds are you taking with the LIthium, including OTC meds. Many time some of the components in the meds do not mix and it can cause a reaction like this. I would write down all the meds you took, when you took them, what size dose you took, and how many, if you ate any qrapefruit. I would then put in an emergency call to your Pdoc and ask him what to do. If he's not available I'd concider going to the ER and talking to the on-call Pdoc.

it takes time to work. They kept me in the ward till it started. And added some good old thorzine..sounds like your really maninc..im now taking 900 mgs. When I started it in 2005 was at 1200 mgs

just an update i saw the psych again on monday and she took me right off the lithium. i have been taking 100mg seroquel for sleep and she told me to up the dose since it wasn't working. she said to up it 100mg at a time and that i can go up to 600mg. she gave me some ativan but only 30. i took one today and it didn't seem to have any effect. no surprise because i also tried valium a month or so ago and it also had no effect. she told me to call her in a couple days if nothing changes.

I tried Lithium after a bad overdose of Lamictal. I was in the hospital for 20 days with that then they put me on Lithium and it made me so sick and everything tasted salty really salty even ice cream. I take Latuda now and it's wonderful, no weight gain.

jlapinska, I hope you are feeling better. I have been on so many dosages of seroquel over the years.......I've been on 200mg for a while now. I go through periods where I can't sleep and seroquel doesn't seem to do anything...but lately it seems to be working again. There are a lot of people here with sleep troubles....seems to go hand in hand with BP a lot. I hope you get some relief soon.

well here i am night #3 still not asleep. already took 300mg seroquel and nothing. just took another 100mg of it. last night i initially took 200mg and had to take another 100mg 2hrs later cause it had no effect. bleh!! i am feeling less manic during the day suddenly but i am still not able to get to sleep.. last night was 3am before i finally fell asleep. there has to be something out there to help with sleep..?

have you looked into topamax or latuda - neither of those cause weight gain like seroquel. it is worth thinking about.
