I'm looking for a job now... After being unemployed since 2008, I'm scared shitless. I'm trying to find a full-time job for the summer and part time for next Fall, when school starts. I'm so overwhelmed that I don't even know where to start looking. I applied and took the profiancy exam to be an English tutor next semester... So I hope that works out. I sent in an app to Wegmans (a food store around the corner from my apt) and I'm going to apply to a bunch of places online tonight. My step dad got me a job finder and I'm going to start looking through that as well. It's hard looking for jobs in my area and ones that I can get to, because I do not have a car. I'm going to be screwed when my school bus pass runs out- it's $5 for an all day trip on the bus. Right now I am on welfare (say what you will- I really don't care) because I've been trying to get on disabliltiy for quite some time now. My BP, anxiety and physical problems have prevented me from working for this long but I think I am finally emotionally stable enough to try and tackle getting a job. The only problem is standing on my feet all day. Stupid medical issues. >_< Goddamn chronic pain. But I have to do it. I'm sick on having to be on welfare and I can no longer rely on my father for financial support. He just expects too much from me. He even said that if I don't lose weight he wouldn't help me with money anymore. That is just a major blow to my self concept and self respect.
I don't know how to make a resume, if anyone has some helpful information about that, I'd love you forever.
Went for an eye exam today. Left eye went to -3.00 -1,75 Great. Right eye went to -2.75 - 2.25 Lovely. It doesn't surprise me though, I can hardly see with the glasses I have now. I got a sample of contacts that'll last for a month, I love them! The doc ordered two more different samples for me, to see which ones I like best. So, three months of free contacts. :) I ordered some pretty rad new glasses too.
It's so strange wearing contacts. No frame disrupting my vision. I haven't seen what my face looks like without glasses since 2006. I'd like to think that I'm rather pretty. :-O
I'm torn between getting a year supply of glasses and returning the new T.V I just ordered. The TV will bring me much pleasure, since I watch so many movies all of the time.
I got my financial refund check and it's all gone now. Credit card bill, household/ beauty supplies, food, indoor AC for the summer, buying my nieces Easter shoes, TV, new glasses, ordering checks from my bank, taking my friend and I out to movie and dinner, a taxi ride, thank you card for my gram and a card for my dad wishing him well. And a bunch of other random stuff.
That may not seem like a lot, but oh boy, does it sure add up.

Sorry for such a long post, but if you made it this far, any tips on job hunting?

RachylA mentioned Craigslist, which is a very good source for paid jobs and volunteer work. The same could be said more or less for Yahoo Local -- the Yahoo directories for your area and mine. If you were looking strictly for volunteer info, Volunteer Match would be good.
You can research things like resume on the Internet. Take your time and leave no stone upturned.
Do you live in a big city? For most of us, the car is really, really important. Maybe there's some way for you to get some wheels for yourself. $600 will get you a clunker or a 50cc scooter.
Are there any employment agencies around there? (Or did you mention that and I missed it?)
One piece of advice for you is to lie like a dog when it comes to your health status!!!! LOL!!!!
I'm warning you!!! A lot of places won't take you on if they know something's wrong with your health!!!
Oh, yeah!! And here's a disgusting little tip I learned while working at WalMart!!!
The guy who was in charge of hiring was training someone else how to do it and one of the things he told him to do was to ask every applicant, 'How's the traffic today?'
That way, they'd probably find out who drove there in a car and who came in a bus. They wouldn't hire the person taking the bus.
Some places look for reasons NOT to hire someone more than they do TO hire them.
Present yourself as a hard-working, fast learner who is 100% dependable and whose private life doesn't consist of anything that might get in the way of you doing your job. I don't care if you don't FEEL that way about yourself. The important thing is to ACT as though you do!!!!
Don't grin like an idiot, but DO make a point of smiling and looking them right in the eyes.
Sometimes, they will wait for you to say something first. You sit there getting more and more uncomfortable while they just sit and look at you and time spins on and on.
If it looks to you like that's happening, ask them 'What would you like to know about me first?' or something like that. Don't act rattled.
And I don't care if you're applying for a job digging ditches, dress like you're a polished, business professional when it comes to applying.
Good luck!!! I hope you find something really good and that won't be too hard on your body!!!! (((((Hugs)))))
