It sounds like she might be depressed. Possibly not BP but is your GP refering her? It doesnt sound like he gave you any clear answers

Mood swings that are extreme certainly are a hallmark of bipolar disorder. Is she impulsive? She should be seen by a psychiatrist to be assessed. The other possibility is that she could be on drugs. Is this a recent change? Is she secretive? I wish you good luck.

She needs a phyiscal to rule out a phyiscal aliment. if that is clean then it could be bp. my mom's thyroid went out and she looked like one of us beepers until the doc firgured out what was going on.

The mood swings have been going on for quiet awhile now..i used to accuse her of doing drugs but she has had some drug test for jobs and school and she passes..i know she is depressed going through alot right now..and yes the gp didn't answer anything..i was trying to get him to refer her for some counciling at least but he blew us off..he did put her on paxil..thank ya'll for advice!

EXACTLY why you need to take her to a pdoc. IF she is bipolar, paxil could send her manic and make her worse!

a pdoc is a pyschiatrist...this type of doctor would be a place to start. They can diagnose, treat (with medication) and monitor mental illness. Has she seen one yet?

Please take her to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist if you're worried - being put on an antidepressant is how I discovered I was bipolar ... the resulting mania meant I ran away from home and lived on and off the streets for four years!

Go back to your GP and flat out ask for a referral, if he refuses I'd go and see a different GP.

Mood swings may mean bipolar, they may not, but there are better ways to find out then sending her manic!

How does your daughter feel? Is she worried, do the mood swings bother her?

(Incidentally, lol @ him asking if she thought she was God ... if that's a diagnostic criteria my exhusband has the worst case of bipolar ever!!)

I too had my first and only manic episode when I was taking Effexor. I hope that your daughter does not have to endure that horrible experience if she is bipolar. Hopefully she has a chance to find out the answer re: a bipolar diagnosis in a proactive way and be able to see a GOOD Psychiatrist. Wishing you the best!

A big sign of my bipolar is my spending habits, its under control for the first time in my life but I would spend money I didn't have and my parents would always bail me out. When I am not on my meds I have dangerous and sometimes violent mood swings, during these mood swings I probably shouldn't be around other people or behind the wheel of a car.

The good news is whatever she has i'm sure there is something out there to help her, it took a long time for me to get help but now I am living a normal, healthy life...I mean besides PMS my mood swings are pretty much under control.

And i'm also around her age-22.

I have been dealing with BP over 40 yrs and sometimes it just takes time to see the behaver be repeated. There are written test one can take from a Pych Doc that will help,alot. I know about the fear of hurting loved ones. Get to a head doc soon.

I think that rapid shift in mood doesn't sound like typical bipolar..ours tend to stay for days, weeks or months.

Moodswings are only part of bipolar and it looks as if the doctor was looking for those, as she said "no" then they do need to look further.

You'll see in that link that there are at least 16 other things that look a bit like bipolar.

thank everyone for your responses..i'm going to find her a pych doc..just to be safe..her ya'll say the moods last longer hers or just maybe minutes or hours not usually days, but she is sefl destructive. does things she knows aren't right but does it anyway..she's in a bad relationship but hoping it's soon over he went to jail and hope they put him under it..but that's another story..again thanks to everyone! have a wonderful day!
