I would hope a doc would recommend hospitalization because it's the best thing for you right now. I was hospitalized 6 times in 3 years, always when I was unemployed. I never saw a bill. It's your decision but be sure you make the right one.

It's a scarey thought though...I don't like those environments. While in hosp. were you on SSI or Medicad/care? Is that required?

If you're needing hospitalization, sooner is better than later. If you wait until you have to be there involuntarily, the outcome is not as likely to be as good, and your stay is likely to be longer than you'd like. Your dr.s cannot force you to go, unless you are deemed a (serious) potential to harm yourself or others. ie: if you say you ARE going to harm yourself, rather than, you FEEL like harmihng yourself, they have no (legal) choice but to hospitalize you. Some people know that, and do so just to get in for some unknowable reason.

Anyone one who WANTS to go in probably needs to be. I mean one would have to be "off their rocker" to really want to go.

I don't feel the need to go. But..I know when i see my doctor Thursday it would help for me to be completely honest and tell him what I did to myself last week. i dont want him to look at it and decide I need to go "in".

My first 2 hospitalizations I didn't have SSD but after that I did.
The basic thing is that if you have no funds you still get treatment.

I think things are slightly different here, but our doctors will send you to hospital mainly if they believe you are a danger to yourself or others.

Hospitalization are usually due to someone being suicidal and homicidal.

If you're completely psychotic will do it? Also if pose a threat to self or others (in the US).

Oh..US hospitals charge major $ don't they!? I was held in US psych ward & charged like, an amount of $$$ that would blow Australian economy off course..paying that was such a pleasure! Grrrr.

Though may have been as am not a citizen? Perhaps they charge citizens more! ;)

Bear in mind, a lot of us here have wanted, and needed to be hospitalized. If it is a stigma to you, that may be hindering you from getting treatment you need. Trust me, I resisted for many years, even though I was trying to figure out the problem. The longer you wait, the higher the price. (in your life) You need to weigh whatever financial costs will be, (if any)...against what costs not going, will be encurred to you. (not necessarily money-wise)

Dont mess around with that kind of stuff. if you want to go then go but dont push them to make you go because it will unpleasant unless its something you yourself want to do to get better for you but dont worry about the unemployment thing, its just the way life is but if you need it then you need it

I've been hospitalized and unemployed, luckily I have had health insurance,,but I have a $5000 bill and I don't know how that is gonna get paid...

My doctors wanted me to go to the hospital because I was going to kill myself and I was in a bad place mentally. They felt it was a safe place for me to be for a few days. I saw a shrink there too and my therapist visited me and the other shrink called in everyday and talked to me. I was on edge, couldn't stop crying, I was hypervigalent, anxious and wanted to die. I am also unemployeed but got on social security three years ago for my bipolar and I have been going to school since and will be finish with my bachelors degree in business in May. I have medicade and medicare insurance because I am on social security. If you want to consider social security, you need a lawyer who specializes in social security. You don't have to pay them up front. They take the money out of your initial payment from social security and if you don't get it it doesn't cost anything. Your shrinks will have to submit documentation of you disorder and where you are in your theapy etc. It takes awhile to get but it is worth the wait.
