After watching and falling in love with American Horror Story seasons: Coven, Freakshow and Hotel I was finally brave enough to watch Asylum.
I thought it would be too triggering due to the psychiatric content as being forever institutionalized is a very real fear that I have, having Schizoaffective Disorder. I have been to the hospital many times and I may go again when I need to, not ruling it out. I had been avoiding watching this season.
I know a couple of good psych wards where I've had good experiences where I would willingly commit myself if I was suicidal enough (which luckily I haven't been since I started smoking weed.
I know from having been to the psych ward many times and having predominantly good, healing experiences that I know AHS Asylum isn't a real picture of how psych wards are right now in 2016, the same way staying in a normal hotel is very little like American Horror Story Hotel with the exception of beautiful setting. It's just an investigation of a worse-case scenario, as good horror is.
I have never really seen that many horror movies because I felt I never had the stomach for it and just didn't want such horrible things in my head as I do hallucinate and hear voices on occasion because of my Schizoaffective disorder. Only unicorns and candy and rainbows for me so when I hallucinate I see faeries and when I hear voices I hear ghosts and aliens and motivational speakers.
I'm watching AHS Asylum right now and two former staff members were just made patients and I'm just so enthralled.Totally fascinated. It's actually really good, even if you have been through the psych ward experience. It's a damning inditement of both religion and previous psychiatric practices.
As a historical angle onto the history of psychiatry I am finding AHS so fascinating because it really did used to be a lot more like this. It's set in 1964 before de-institutionalization. It's a worse-case scenario, of course.
But if you have a strong stomach, and aren't triggered by bad things happening in psychiatric places, I would totally recommend it. You can stream it on Amazon Prime right now.

The series itself is triggering for me on many levels but I made it through Asylum and having met some of those characters when in the Hospital as a teen I found compelled to watch. Yeah I didnt sleep well but then again do I sleep well ever? lol
Its a brillaint show all around but as you said not for weak stomachs.
Did you ever watch those "haunted" asylums on Youtube? Weird stuff.
Hotel was substantially gnarlier then any previous season, although I loved it. It has given me nightmares before, but I am still fascinated by it. I will probably never feel the quite the same about staying in a hotel again, though.
Sometimes watching it is actually therapeutic, to be triggered and then see it all made right again by the end of the season is incredibly satisfying. I'm waiting for that payoff in Asylum.
i feel like with the psychiatric content I'm actually enjoying Asylum even more for that. Just knowing the real modern psych ward if you go to a good one is not very much like that, but relating oh so deeply to the parts that are the same. Like when Lana Winters gets out of Briafcliff, i have so felt that, "I am out of the psych ward and I am about to make everything right in my new life" moment.
Hard to believe what some would do to others because they're different.
