Found this while researching side effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy, colloquially known as ECT. It's something I'm considering lately because I have no faith in psychiatric medicine, namely antipsychotics and antidepressants, but... Damn. Nearly every account lists permanent memory detriment as a side effect, and a nasty, invasive one at that. l:
I'm sharing this link though because I've noticed people taking an interest to ECT on both the main board and elsewhere, and this thread has over 600 user reviews, AND is a DS thread nonetheless.

After her first ECT treatment , she lost 2 or 3 years of memory.
She had to learn how to walk, feed herself , drive ...she had to relearn the most basic of life skills
She forgot most of her nursing training also.
Although, several members currently on DS , manage to work and do well after ECT.
I think it probably depends on the individual as to how they respond.
Which is why I probably would never elect to have ECT... I just know I'd be the one who lost too much memory to function well after treatment
