Apologies for getting on my High Horse on this matter, but we should stop making Pop Stars legislators in the West.
I trying to keep my fear in check. I just see this going out of control, esp. after the sloppy way the TX hospital handled the case and the CDC leaving the sheets & towels in the apt. WTF?
It is frightening but it is the reality we live
It's not going to become a pandemic.
One UK guy caught it in Africa. He was brought back to the UK and in a week or so he was fine and going back to his family.
Culturally up until now there has been a habit in Africa with relatives touching the people infected. That and people not being able to get to hospital means that there are people in the intermediate stages of the disease who are still at home in a normal croweded environment. That would not happen in the west and so the disease would not spread.
Western hospitals have much better fascilities and infrastructure than in the affected parts of Africa.
They are getting volunteers in Oxford to try out a vaccine.
I'm hoping that the west will come up with something really effective soon.
I don't think it's a threat to the west but it's worth fixing. But as I said before maleria is a bigger issue in Africa (which is also being worked on).
I wonder if people are aware that one of the biggest killers of babies in subsarhan Africa is simple diarohea. Some thing so easy to fix in the west but so deadly over there.
You are not going to die of ebola in the west.
But people in Africa will. More will die of maleria and diahrea and things that in the west we solved a century or more ago.
If you want to feel safer then donate to charaties who are helping sub sahara Africa with medical aid and trying to alleviate povery because poverty is the rela driver of this.
I watch the news and scan stories of importance online when I can. My anxiety doesn't allow me to sit and watch hours of it. I was visiting relatives over the summer and they had cable news channels on ALL DAY LONG watching it over and over again and discussing everything and it was TOO MUCH! I remember learning in high school journalism class about ethics and how bad sensationalism or bias reporting was....now it's all there is!! It suddenly became all about ratings and popularity and and and...
I know it's important to be informed about what's going on in the world but I feel like it's OVERLOAD in this technological world. I agree with curiousfish...there are other diseases out there....media just needs a catchword that grabs your attention and EBOLA is serious stuff but our conditions here are so, so different from the situations in Africa...
We can all do something to help in many ways but we are fed a message that it is so hopeless theat we don't even try and so the suffering of others (and ourselves) that could be avoided continues.
