I just started working last year after not working for about 9 yrs. One of the main reasons it was hard for me to work is dealing with some people.Specifically, ignorant people, those who do the absolute minimum, and those who try to put blame on those that don't deserve it.( I really do not handle undeserved blame well)
My problem right now is the first type of person.I have a coworker who is a Jehovah's witness.I don't share her beliefs, but I respect her right to have them. Her birthday was this past weekend and when she got to work this morning another coworker,I will call her "linda" asked what the woman had done for her birthday. When she said that she hadn't done anything,Linda asked,"not even go out to dinner?".The woman said, that no she doesn't celebrate because she is a Jehovah's Witness. She was polite and left it at that. After she had left,I mentioned to Linda that Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate holidays or birthdays thinking maybe even though she knew her religion, she wasn't thinking about it or had forgotton.Linda started smiling and laughing and informed me that she knew, she was just trying to see if she could get the woman do snap at her and "say it".I was INFURIATED!I wanted to hit her in her smug, stupid smiling face!
She acted like she expected me to find it funny, but I let her know that it was rude.
Linda also made several rude and inappropriate comments to me last year concerning special needs individuals. In one instance when I told her that an individual was probably embarrassed enough by something that had happened without her yelling about it where everyone could hear, she once again brought out the stupid, smug smile and laugh. She informed me that he was"a special" and couldnt get embarrassed because he didnt know or understand anything that was going on.The person came back later and clearly communicated to me what he needed without any trouble.I should mention I have a 11 year old son with autism. When I heard her comment and saw the look I ant even describe on her face I was completely disgusted ! Really, really wanted to knock her out.
I don't deal well with situations like that, and I get very angry and upset.I have tried to interact with her as little as possible, but it is difficult and at times it is enough to make me to even be there.
I know my husband would not be supportive of me not working there because of it,and a transfer is not feasible. My husband would say I'm just overreacting and being bipolar and it would be stupid. But it can be REALLY,REALLY difficult to be around this woman and keep my cool, especially just trying to handle normal work stresses.
Ant suggestions on how to handle the stress and not completely go off ?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I don't think that it's you being bipolar - this person is setting out to be obnoxious. Re the autism thing, my two adult step son's are on the spectrum also but I don't think that you would need to have that experience to realise that people with autism or learning difficulties have feelings just the same as everyone else and often take in alot more than people give them credit for.
I'm not sure what you can do to change how you feel about this - or if really I should attempt to, your feelings are valid.
I think I might ponder on what it makes a person like that and what it must be like living with all that hate for the rest of humanity. And then let the world do to them what it will.
You would think the management of a non-for-profit with such a good cause would be compassionate towards their employees right? Not!
The management and a handful of peers were complete assholes. Absolutely no compassion, or shread of kindness. Anyway sometimes its hard to work in certain situations and or companies.
I made the mistake in telling my supervisor ( who was a real ghetto, slimeball) my condition. Next thing there was gossip about me. Could I actually drive correctly? Was it safe for me to drive the company vans? Etc..
Anyway, the rumors were so over the top on questioning my ability to perform my job duties, I simply quit. Weeks before quitting I did spew a bit of verbal venom and stated I would sue this companies ass off if people were going to question my abilities... Or try and start rumors to get me fired.
Anyway the rumors did clear up, but not the emotional damage to me. I had a nervous breakdown and quit after they gave me an extra hard work load. I don't remember a time when I so openly wept in public...the stress was too much.
I did do a great job, much better than most. You would be amazed at the kind of mistakes other drivers made. Bringing the wrong blood orders to the wrong hospitals, damaging blood units, forgetting blood units in the work vehicles over night...and the blood spoiling...
Sorry just venting about that job. I am now with nicer people, but it came at a pay loss... It is what it is..
Try not to let a few bad employees ruin things completely for you..
I know everyone gets mad and wishes they could go off or walk out at times, but I really have to put so much effort into Not doing it because I realize I would just be screwing myself. But it's really hard. And it's not like I could do it and just walk back in the next day and say "sorry,I was manic and it made my temper worse and I was more impulsive, but I didn't mean it".
When I have problems with things, I write down affirmations that help me feel better about myself and then read them everyday out loud to myself before I go to work. I used Bible verses, but you can find affirmations by just looking them up online or on Pinterest.
Otherwise I would just try to ignore her as well... It may be that she has a personality disorder or that she's just plain immature... She seems to want to belittle others and I find that just plain sad... Perhaps you can calmly ask her why she wants to do this?.. Big hug...xo
Yikes! I have the same issues entirely Sherry!
It took me a long time to get this job too getting off disability and everything....
Some days I wonder if it's worth it!
I think many have said good advice...our work is to create a plan of harm reduction, and minimize the time spent interacting with the " asshole."
Good luck this isn't easy....
