TWO local dogs are competing to claim national "best in show" next month.
Chiquita, owned by Simone Tipler, and Milo, owned by Sharon Smith, are two of just 60 dogs which have made it to the national final of Scruffts Crufts for crossbreeds.
Chiquita is a one-year-old Chihuahua cross poodle and qualified from the Findon Downs Companion Dog Show in the prettiest bitch category.
Simone, of Jarvis Lane, Steyning, said: "I've never done anything like this before."
Paws in the Park
"I'm really excited and really looking forward to it," said Simone.
"Chiquita's not treated like a show dog she does go on long walks and she loves mud."
Milo is a three-year-old Labrador collie cross and qualified after coming first in the child's best friend category in the Paws in the Park dog show.
He will be handled by Sharon's daughter, eight-year-old Charlie, for the competition.
Child's best friend
"I'm excited," said Charlie.
"It's my first time in a show."
Sharon, of Windmill Close, Upper Beeding, said: "When we were at Paws in the Park, the judge made Charlie walk across the ring with Milo, and I thought, 'I hope he doesn't pull her over', but she was really great.
"Charlie was so chuffed when she got through.
"I'm proud of her, but I get even more proud when we go to the obedience classes and she does so well."
Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year 2008
There are four categories in the Scruffts show, part of the Kennel Club's Discover Dogs weekend: most handsome crossbreed dog, prettiest crossbreed bitch, child's best friend and golden oldie crossbreed.
Fifteen dogs will compete in each category, before the four winners battle it out to become Scruffts Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year 2008.
"It's quite a coincidence that out of 60 dogs from the whole country, there are two of us going from the same area who know each other," said Simone.
"That's quite an achievement."
Summer Strallen
Sharon, who owns the Handsome Hounds Dog Groomers in Upper Beeding, said: "Hopefully, they'll both be brilliantly behaved on the day.
"It would be fantastic to get to the final four."
The competition will be judged by celebrity judge Summer Strallen, famous for her roles in Hollyoaks and the West End hit The Sound of the Music.
The Scruffts show is on Sunday, November 9, at Earls Court, London.
