Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Good Morning Everyone -
I am new to the group and look forward to receiving your feedback. My nearly 21 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well as personality disorder. Her doctors prescribed lamictal, but after only a couple of days she does not want to take it anymore because she does not like the way it makes her feel. In the past she has been prescribed some other medications for anxiety and depression and also said she had bad side effects.
If she will not help herself, what can we do? She lives at home with my husband and I and our 27 year old son. There is so much stress in the house. It is not healthy for any of us.
Any recommendations would be helpful at this time. This has been going on for several years with no improvements.
Thanks so much!

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

My son was out of the house, he's been back for almost a year...I've come to the place where I'm hurting him by allowing him to live here...he needs to find his own way in life, make his own mistakes etc.
I don't know your situation, I sure have walked in your shoes of 'egg shells Everywhere'. It's Really Hard...you and your husband pay for the house. Do either of your young adults pay rent? Do they have any responsibilities? Are they working? I recently watched the below videos, I'm hoping for you and your husband they might help you to better understand the "hurting vs. enabling"...they won't move from their comfortable space easily...David Ramsey:

I finally got to the place where I've put myself first, along with my health, my son is Leaving. I have a hotel room for him with a kitchenette...he will be paying for it with social security and his part time employment. I had planned on the first of January, but as of Right Now's Blow Out, he might be Going Today! LOL I'm sitting here shaking due to his 'two year old behavior "being in the middle of a computer game"....
There is a site on here for parents of bipolar kids/young adults for support...maybe check it out too. Best of luck!
I understand how she feels. I’m going on 37 and was not diagnosed until 34 and I’ve gone off my meds a few times to “just see” I notice such a difference with my lamactil. It’s my favorite medication. Least side effects.
Maybe encourage her to read up on the different medications. Have her become part of her treatment.
I personally like how my provider lets me approach meds slowly. Even starting at child doses and slowly working my up to the therapeutic dose. The dose that actually will start to provide relief.
Just know this. As an adult, even I hate the way meds make me feel. It sucks. It’s trial and error. Just have to find the right combo.
I haven’t found it yet. But I want to NOW... It took time to want to.
See what other ways you can support her by a holistic approach? Or what she wants to try first. Just continue to be there for support. But you don’t have to support unhealthy or dangerous ideas.
I wish you the best. I know my undiagnosed self in my early 20’s didn’t want to listen to anything. I knew it all.
Go back to your 20’s. Listen to her from a different view point. There will always be trial and error. If she doesn’t want to take prescription medication, have her research another approach to managing symptoms. Maybe once she gets involved she will understand better.
As ml wrote you can't force her at her age but neither do you have to tiptoe in your own home
I would give her a couple of months to find her own place if it were me and encourage her to work with her doctor.... Another hug.....xo
