Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I had about 2 years of bipolar-mostly depression, but some over enthusiastic hypomania and have now had a couple of years feeling pretty fine.
Before the major 2 years of really bad ups and downs I have always been a bit extreme ( esp drinking too much alcohol) but was never dx or prescribed meds.
My question is-with bipolar onset not really hitting till my 50's (could have been menopausal and situational- living with a difficult male, with money and other problems)what would you think about me trying to come off prozac, lithium and sodium valproate (epilim)- to see how I respond to a meds free life?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I think discuss you feeling you are not bipolar with youur doctor and go from there.
You'd have to come off of them very slowly and one at a time... You need medical supervision..xo
A year and a half ago I did start weanning off my meds, I also was on a merry-go-round so it took me three months to go off completly.
Those were the worst months of my life, but things turned around and I started to feel great, that feeling was short lived as I went on to full blown mania. The next ten months my roller-coaster had no control buttons to help my ride level out and that's when I decided to go back on my meds.
It's been four months of stability in my life. If you are stable on meds please consider staying on them, they are the only tool we have to help us live with this disabling disease.
My pdoc once told me that the "50's" are the worst years for a women with bp, after that life goes pretty well back to normal. I am hanging onto his words as I am only half way through mine.
All the best to you.
Life events and triggers, set it into motion.
If you are feeling well, it probably means the meds are working.
If feel you must try and go off meds, deff do it with your Dr's supervision.
NOTE...most BP people at one time or another, are totally convinced they are NOT bipolar.
