Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

Saw my primary today and I asked her if urological issues could cause an uptick in Hypomania. She could not answer that question.
I had heard that urinary infections can cause certain behavioral issues, she said to ask my new psychiatrist.
Over the past 2 months I have had symptoms of kidney stones. Have had these for years, so kinda know what is what when it happens. So, it's happening again three weeks after my last kidney stone. Only my doctor thinks with the way the lab results showed that this could be something else and not a kidney stone. So, waiting for more labwork to see what's up. In the meantime she referred me to a kidney doc and a urologist................... great, my calendar is already crowded with other doctor appts for the next two months.
The aging process has not been kind to me. Big sigh.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

As for Infections causing an increase in mental illness. The Blood Brain Barrier's job is to protect the brain from circulating pathogens. Accordingly, blood-borne infections of the brain are pretty rare. There a handful of pathogens that can cross the Barrier and directly affect the brain. Almost all medications including Antibiotics are too large to cross the Blood Brain Barrier and generally have to be administered directly administered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) where it can enter the brain by crossing the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Its pretty complicated and we don't know much about the potential of the Blood Brain Barrier yet.
Linking Mood Disorder development via Infections that cross the Blood Brain Barrier is more conjecture than proven Science and requires tons more Research.
I've had Chronic Kidney Stones since I was 32, I have 1 working Kidney, generally pass between 4 - 6 Stones a year and have had surgeries to remove large stones and stones that get stuck somewhere in the System over the years. I've never had Kidney Stone Issues cause a Manic Ep. Yes, my body is total crap. lol
Kat
I looked up bladder infections causing behavioral changes and indeed it can, should have looked it up before I posted this thread.
So tomorrow will find out the pathology report, but have to go to two new doctors, oh more joy.
I have varying levels of Ammonia in my blood from my liver disease. I take Lactulose to reduce the severity the ammonia causes and it can cross over the blood brain barrier causing alot of behavioral issues and even death.
I also have Hashimoto's Disease and that can contribute to the Kidney Stones. Following a low Oxalate diet helps control the Stones somewhat.
I see a Nephrologist/Kidney Stone Specialist as I've also had 1/2 my Bladder removed from complications from a Hysterectomy years ago and I have Liver Disease...he deals with all of it. My body really is crap. lol
I applaud your ability to deal with all of this and still have the goodness in your heart to take care of your very sick pet.
I hope within all of this that you manage to get some good rest without other residents knocking on your door. It seems most of us have crap bodies to deal with in different ways. I wish you ease.
good luck with it all.
hugs
Kat ~ Have you ever had a Lithotripsy of your kidneys? I understand while the stones are in your kidney a Lithotripsy can be conducted to break up the stones. I have never had this done as usually when I get to having a CTScan, the stone has already started traveling down the ureter.
Hashimotos is a low thyroid count with inflammation? I have Hypothyroid w/goiter and multiple nodules. Not on synthroid as my levels are always within normal range. Had a biopsy last year as the nodules keep growing. Seeing my endocrin doc in two weeks and he will do another ultrasound and I bet I will have to have another biopsy, not fun. Do you take anything for your Hashimotos?
There is no diet for Uric Acid Stones that I can see. I do drink half my weight in fluid ounces daily, so not sure what is going on in that area. I recently tried to donate a kidney to a close friend of mine, but because of my history of kidney stones and my age, I was told that my remaining kidney function would go down to 30%, so the transplant team denied me this option. I was very serious about this. Due to my age and having more years behind me than before, I wanted to do something like this to help someone's life. It was a big disappointment for me and for the donor.
Do you have chronic pain from your kidney's now? When my kidney stone begins to travel I have very painful acid reflux along with constant burping. Then the pain in my back up my right shoulder blade is equivalent to back labor pain. Then it radiates around my waist and and on down. Then I get intense sharp pains when it moves. Have you seen a urologist for his, or just your nephrologist? I wonder why my primary didn't send me straight to a nephrologist, but sent me to a urologist instead. Last time, the neurologist wanted to place a shunt in my ureter which I did not want to do. I felt seeing a urologist was a waste of time. She recommended I start taking D-Mannose to help prevent future bladder infections, ever heard of that?
I also have NAFLD. What type of liver disease do you have? I went thru a liver biopsy and am in Stage 1 with fibrosis of portal vein. Oh joy. I am not sticking to the specific diet to prevent it from getting worse. I would never qualify for a transplant due to my suicide ideation with multiple hospitalizations.
I like the idea of having an ultrasound every 3 months to monitor stone production. Thinking I will ask to be referred to a Nephrologist. Thank you for sharing this with me. As soon as I get my lab results today, I'll start with the Tamsulosin if it's not a bladder infection, which I doubt. But then I can have a bladder infection with a kidney stone. It's soo much fun being me.
I'm sorry that part of your bladder had to be removed. That must have been very painful !! My last stone removal, had to stretch my ureter so the following week, it felt like I was urinating razor blades. That is why I do not want a shunt.
Thank you for sharing all this with me (( hugs ))
I saw a Urologist in the beginning when the Stones first started.
When you said after your stone removal you would get a shunt. How did they remove your stone, thru surgery? I have had stones removed thru surgery in the past. But that was about 20 years ago and the urologist never placed a shunt. When they remove the shunt, is that an office procedure, does it hurt when they pull it out??? Yikes !!! Going to run and hide now, lol.
Someone at my book club said they had Lithotripsy and it damaged her kidney, now she has 12% usage. The CT Technician warned me away from that procedure as well. Wasn't there one years ago, when they would sit you in a tub of water and send sound waves to break up the stones?
Are you taking anything for your arthritis and degenerative joint disease? I feel for you. My mother had the same thing, resulting in many back surgeries. I think she took Liquid Gold for awhile and used a TENS unit and that seemed to help. What about swimming, can you do that?
Thank you for talking to me about your kidney stone issue. It is easing my mind having someone to talk to who has been thru all this.
I am on day 3 and already my GI issues seem to be settling down and less pain, so I may have already passed it, fingers crossed.
They also think there is some autoimmune disease operating in the mix so life is fun trying to figure out what is causing what at any given time.
I only take topamax (low dose 100 x 2/day and xanax for generalised anxiety cptsd and muscle relaxant but I keep my use of xanax fairly limited and only take it when absolutely needed.I used to be on a lot of meds but I am hugely med resistant, they either don't work at all or I have converse reactions to them. Relaxation exercises and meditation help with both BP1 and anxiety and dealing with pain, better than any med. I started taking cbd oil, zero thc last March and it is working well for mood with suicidal ideation mostly absent for the first time since I was 15yrs old (my first attempt was at that time with countless times since and much fury at my lack of success each time. I did all my research and many times have had the medics shaking their heads in astonishment at my survival. Two of my brothers died from Bipolar suicide, one at 31 in 2003 and it was a happy release for him as he was a gentle soul with a huge heart who had a very difficult life. The other took an OD of my meds (not cool, I didn't even know he was in the house) and he fell, injured his spine and ended up quadriplegic until he finally got his wish last year and died from a chest infection with a DNR which for some strange reason allowed them not to administer antibiotics. It baffles me to this day though at least he has finally found peace too.
My siblings descended like vultures and within an hour of his death had gone to his apartment in the Home and removed everything of value that he possessed including the money in his wallet. I was stunned. I have been no contact with them when they turned into creatures I did not recognise as soon as my father died in 2011 so my life is much easier without them in it. Only four out of the 12 in the family sought help for BP but the other 8 refuse to acknowledge that they have any problems and dismissed the four of us.
An anti inflammatory diet, exercise and no sugar help me too and the support here on DS has kept me alive on many occasions and now I have two private groups on FB which are wonderful and often fun which is a much needed component in our lives.
I hope your kidney stone has passed at last and you get a reprieve for some time now and have time to recover mentally and physically.
i'm trying pieces of orange in my oatmeal this morning as i only had about six blueberries left an, you know, it tastes very good with a big mug of hot tea to warm me up while the heating kicks in.
have an excellent day. hugs
It's all about entitlement with siblings and the death of a parent. I had to hire an estate attorney to fight for my mothers wealth and he said he could write a book on "Entitlement with family members"
My sisters took all my mothers wealth claiming she gifted them everything while in end stages of Alzheimers, before her death. There was nothing left for me. My attorney wanted me to turn my sister (The Executor) into her states Attorney General for Executor fraud which would have incarcerated her. I did not want to do that to her as she was raising her children then, so I walked away. I have not heard from them since 2001. So, I understand your experience, sadly.
Do you have Lyme Disease where you are, not sure your geographic location. Some of your symptoms sound like Lyme. I'm soo sorry you have soo much pain to deal with.
What color are you going to pain your room?
I think I passed my kidney stone as I am no longer in pain, thank you for your kind thoughts.
It's soo refreshing to hear that the members here have helped you soo much. I am finding a family here too.
Yes, we do have lymes and I tested negative for that among other things that have been ruled out. I've never had a tick bite or been exposed to it in any other way so it was an outside chance anyway.
Thank goodness your pain has eased, that must be a relief. BTW muffling earphones sound like a great idea. How's your cat? Did the vet ever get back to you?
One thing I did manage to do regarding inheritance was to call the solicitor to make sure she knew that one of my brothers had died and had a surviving son so that made sure that my lovely nephew got his share. The siblings were furious because they had not mentioned him to the solicitor. They were also furious because my father had changed his will in their favour but he died before my mother (much to his and their astonishment!) and when she died almost a year later she had only a 'simple' will which automatically divided the proceeds from the house equally. They did however clear everything out of the house and either sold, kept or threw away everything without telling me. I had asked one sister to let me know when it was happening because my mother had many photos put aside for me along with all my published articles, publicity and childhood mementos of mine but they are all gone. I did get the sitting room suite of furniture which is about 63/4 yrs old but I don't think they realised how much it meant to me to have it. It was almost as if it was designed perfectly to fit my sitting room and the couch is also a double bed. My mother had re-upholstered it about ten years before she died and it is in pristine condition but it had no value to them. They also strangely returned some of the items I had gifted the parents over the years which was fine by me. My sister in america too would have loved all my mother's scrapbooks but they were all dumped so she got nothing except a horrible painting that my father stipulated was to be given to her.
Yes I believe our friends are often the family we choose and life is a hell of a lot better without them in it.
I hope your day has gone well for you. hugs.
When I have to attend family funerals or events I always bring a tall male bodyguard with me and smile sweetly and greet them all and always bring goodies that I know they love. They look at me in astonishment when I walk away again without a backward glance seeking nothing from them.
