Anyone taking antypsychotics and metformin?

I was curious if anyone on here is currently taking metformoin and also antipsychoitcs to curb the weight gain. I remember reading an article that said it helps. I know that diet and exersize works etc.. but you have to be honest there is nothing that combats the weight gain naturaly on these evil freaking pills we have to take. If anyone is taking metformin or any other type of pill the combats weight gain please let me know.

Well, if you want to be honest, there are those of us who have battled the weight gain that comes with anti-psychotics and we have won....I weigh less now than when I first started on my anti-psychotic, and I gained a lot of weight really quickly when I first started on it.....no, its no cake walk, but for me, its better than taking more pills that have more side effects...

Good luck with the metformin....I hope that it gives you results....I know that the weight gain from anti-psychotics is no fun!

Abilify isn't weight gain-y, in my experience. Definitely give metformin a whirl otherwise.

Yea when I take abilify my legs swell up and so does my stomach I was on a very strict diet and people was wandering what was wrong with me , so I guess everyone is different.

At this moment I fired my previous dr. so I am going to look for a new one. I hope I can find one that will do this there are so many articles about this surely a doctor would do this...

On Abilify for the small time that I was, I retained water - especially in my legs. I gained 10lbs (which was water I am sure) and I lost it all once the med was stopped and out of my system.

I do not take metformin, for some reason they would not give it to me - I do have an issue with hypoglycemia at times so maybe that is why? My endocrinologist wasn't real thrilled with that idea when I mentioned it. But I find Topamax helps with the hunger on Seroquel.

I do take Seroquel and Metformin (Glucophage). I think it does help with weight....I'm not gaining.
There was a doctor or nurse (DS approved) that posted about this maybe a year ago. That was the first time I had ever heard of it.

I also have Topomax that I quit about a month ago, to see if my probs with tastes were from that, but will be starting them up again.
They were specifically prescribed to counteract the Seroquel weight gain.

i thought glucophage(metformin) was used for the treatment of diabetes? that is what my husband take it for and he has gained weight - not good for a diabetic.

Hi Jamieson...yes...a lot of antipsychotics induce type 2 diabetes (or prediabetes)..effect how blood sugar is regulated..hence the use of diabetes med Metformin/glucophage..or so I believe.

hey lou =) so when you take it do you also use a blood glucose meter? i am so confused. in order to be put on it do you have to have fasting levels drawn or have your HbAIC checked frequently?

I was already on Metformin for yrs. before starting Seroquel. I have type 2 diabetes.
Yes, I'm supposed to check my sugar levels often and get an A1c at least every six months.
That's what I'm "supposed" to do :-)

No..not unless diabetic, I don't think? Surely someone on this board would know? I had some articles on this topic but was just looking through my files without success. Anyway, it sounds very promising for those who must take worst offender antipsychotics..particularly long term & whose weight really skyrockets as a consequence.blah blah. :)

    Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner.  I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings.  But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!
