I've had bipolar I for over 10 years now. Prior to that, I had about 5 years of just depression. Ever since the beginning of November, I've been feeling depressed, off & on, throughout the day. I usually feel ok in the morning, but later on, depression will hit. Then, I might feel better later, or I might not. It's a roller coaster of depression & "normal". I haven't had any manias during this time. With this depression, I've been waking up early, getting only 3-5 hours of sleep, & am easily irritated. I've never felt quite like this before. I don't see my pdoc for another week or so, & I'm just wondering if any of you know if this sounds like rapid cycling, or something else. I always assumed rapid cycling was going from depression to mania to depression...Whatever I'm going through, it's really frustrating, cause I make a plan for the afternoon, & as it gets closer to the time to go, the depression hits, along with anxiety, & I end up cancelling it. I used to have agoraphobia, & was housebound for 3 years at one point. I don't want to end up there again. Does anyone have any ideas? I'd really appreciate any input.

Go ahead and call your pdoc just to let them know what's going on. They might be able to help you over the phone, that way when you go in they can evaluate how the plan is working and you get help that much faster.
what I can find out. To all of you, you're right that I need to see the doctor about it. But, it's another 2 weeks before I can get in to see her, & she's new to me, so I have to see her in person before she'll make any changes. So, I just thought I'd check in here.

I am considered a rapid cycler. At times I have suffered with ultra-radian cycling which makes me feel so crazy. I believe that in the the DSM 4 mood changes in a year is considered to be rapid-cycling. I can change 4-6 (or more) times in a day never mind year.
I've been told that my illness is not the 'typical'Bipolar. That my swings are extreme. I don't stay stable for any length of time at all.
I don't just go from Mania to depression either. Actually, I rarely have depression now. I mainly swing from happy to very high to manic or almost manic. Sometimes the irritable mood is tossed in too. I've just learned to take it easy when I am swinging badly. And to get on with it when i can manage.
