My ex has taken it upon himself to tell our child that he is going to be bi-polar like he is. The child is 8. I am very concerned by this because I have witnessed many changes in our child since he informed him of this information. A child who was once patient, fun loving, caring to all others, egger to learn in school and laughs a lot has changed into a impatient, pushy child. Our child has gotten even some what aggressive with me when I don't give what is being asked for. See I am the strict parent, responsible for all needs as in medical, education and typical learning process of growing up. My ex on the other hand is the fun parent who provides video games galore, lazy time doing much of nothing but sitting in front of the T.V. and no responsibility for much of anything. I have full custody. But ex does have weekend visits awarded by the judge. I have taken it upon myself to have our son sit with a councilor on a regular basis as I am worried about his mental state. Our child is already medically challenged, I worry the emotional will effect his already frail health.
Isn't at year 8 that a child's character starts to develop .
Could it be that the fun parent dad is more enjoyable to be around , and the fact that children are at that age still just kids at heart .
While some kids can exhibit bp symptoms fairly young, I doubt an 8 year old can understand what he's going through. You might want to try re posting this in the "Families and Friends of Bipolar" support group - perhaps someone over there would have more advice. Or you can always talk to your pediatrician of course!
