Bipolar divorce occurs in an alarming 90 percent of marriages in which one partner is suffering from bipolar disorder. The most obvious reason for this disintegration is the substantial social morbidity that results from the bipolar individuals maladaptive behavior. Many couples with a bipolar partner often go to standard marriage counselors. These marriage therapists are not equipped to handle the complex marriage situation faced within these families. Often the GAL or therapist will automatically recommend children be placed by the non Bipolar parent. Therapist with MA, LMFT that are trained to work with BiPolar or a physiatrist can assist you.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

I've seen things similar quoted on the net but when I found the real research it concluded that it was actually depression that caused marital breakdown - and of course depression is extremely common outside of the bipolar population.
In all the stats I have read on bipolar marriages it's a 90% divorce rate. The general public is 48%.
That means that there are a number of statistics that don't agree and they have simply taken the highest.
Actually the oft repeated figure of 90% probably has it's source with Dr S. Nassir Ghaemi and it is his clinical experience. But his experience with what must be a fairly small numbe rof bipolar patients even if he is seeing them day in and day out, in one fairly small location.
His observation, which is totally valid, has then been taken by others as being a universal truth and changed to "studies have shown".
It's very lazy journalism and poor science. It seems no one has actully done that study.
