What Do I Do?

I have been in counseling for 3 years. I have come a long way, but I still have a long way to go. My case manager told me today that she doesn't think I need to see my counselor much more, that I can handle it on my own. My counselor told me a while back that I would always be in counseling in some form. Who do I listen to? What do I do?

I don't know if your case counselor's job is to try and get people off of therapy or what? I really don't understand. I've been in counseling for seven yrs. now. I only go once a month now unless I'm having some issues and then she bumps me up to every two weeks.Something doesn't sound right. Your getting two completely different opinions. What do you think you would like to do or what would be best for you? Try to get them to agree to what you think is best and argue your point if need be. Good Luck!!

Thanks Miss Sunshyne! I know deep in my mind that I am not ready to stop counseling, but my case manager can be very convincing about my being able to take care of myself now. I see my counselor tomorrow and I am going to see what she says about all this. My case manager is 25 years old, my counselor has over 30 years experience. I should probably go with what she says right?

Listen to what both of them have to say. But only you know how strong you are without an ally to talk to that you trust who is objective.

I'd tell my case manager I felt a little intimidated by their position of power and therefore didn't make plain how uncomfortable and inconsistent the advice was I was receiving.

Counseling is a cornerstone to mental well-being in the long-term treatment of serious mental illness. I do not know why your case manager would suggest you do without it. Unless all of your issues are resolved and you are completely stable and have been for many years with no stressors in your life, I see it as a bad call. But that is just my opinion. As a holder of a Bachelor's in Psychology. Still, it is just an opinion.
