I've always been confused about my childhood due to my mind or my subconscious blocking certain memories and replacing them with more pleasant but much less factual 'memories'. When discussing my childhood in therapy I made mention of this. Now it's happening again- this time to my teenage memories. When I think back to certain periods, especially painful times, it's foggy and it seems unreal- like I dreamt it. Much like it is when I try to relive childhood memories. I can feel the internal battle. One side saying this isn't what happened and the other side adamant that the memories I'm accessing are real. I spoke to my tdoc and he thinks now that I'm in the process of recovery my subconscious is pushing back the memories that trigger my mood swings. Frankly, I feel like my brain is altering and deleting things- not hiding them. It's not just affecting my long-term memory now though and that's what's so worrying. I ask my boyfriend the same questions repeatedly, I misplace things, I forget what happened in class or a conversation I just had. Pdoc suggested documenting the things that happened throughout the end of the day before bed so I can refer to them if I need to the next day. I think that's just nuts. Reminds me of this movie... Won't even try to remember the title.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

Memory helps us deal with situations which are either the same or similar to past events. It's useful as a prehuman that goes down to the watering hole on some African plane to remember as they approach that last time a crocodile nearly bit you. The stronger the emotion at the time, the stronger the meory. But you don't need to be constantly remembering it.
If you are learning new stuff then old memories will typically fade. Only in your dotage when there is not much else going on do the memories of childhood come back.
I can't remember huge parts of my life - but I sort of know what happened. Just not the specifics.
