16 yr old on INVEGA

My 16 yr old niece was recently Dx as BP..my sister ,who has decided to let her 16 yr old,be totally responcible for her own treatment(sis says niece is mature enough to handle her own treatment,and the BP is mild)

My sister didn't really even know what med her daughter is on,but by her stumbling around with trying to pronounce it..it seems like my niece is on INVEGA.

I Googled it..it is not approved for pediatric BP,and is an anti-phycotic med.

I don't think Invega ,is a "mild BP" med...and of course I'm concerned about my niece.

My sister says she will not even research the med......how will my sister know ,if my niece is having a bad reaction ,or going into episode ,if my sister has not researched BP?

This really scares me!
And I think it's irresponcible of my sister.

Would you let your 16 yr old take total respocebility for treatment?

My sister hasn't even gone to a Pdoc appt with my niece!

My son has adhd and other issues (not BP though) and I did not let him take responsibility at age 16 for his medications. I only recently stopped going to his pdoc appointments with him (he's 19 now).

Wow dd. Your sis is abdicating her responsibilities as a parent. Her daughter is not of legal age! That's the first thing. Secondly, your niece has a major mental illness, mild or not. Of course your sister should be trying to learn as much as she can about it and be monitoring her daughter as closely as possible without her daughter feeling like her space is being invaded. (hard for parents with a sick teen.) That is the normal scenario. So sorry to hear about this. It's hard to understand your sister's mentality. She's in denial for sure. She's ill it seems. I can't diagnose because I know nothing of her. Just sorry to hear.

the drug is an anti-psychotic, primarially used for treating schzophrenia.

After many discussions w my Pdoc ,about my sisters behaviors towards me...Pdoc (only by conjecture) has thoughts that my sister is Boarder line ,and clinically Narsasistic..

and yes ,she goes into denial about everything...or worse yet..is so involved n her own world,abdicateing responcibility,is her way of not having to be responceible.

I thought I was only allowed to have idiots in my family. I can only think that you can sit her down and tell her about yourself if she doesn't already know, or you can explain to her that you can help her when she wants it, or you can just take over whenever the hell you feel like it.

I like the third choice and her mom can jump in a lake if she doesn't like it.

I have thought about butting in..this is a serious matter..maybe life and death..and lastgunslinger...by hapenschance,we have a lake in the middle of our town..maybe I should use it ,as you suggested
