Something like a worry stone works well for me. When I am beginning to feel overwhelmed, I take out my rock and rub my thumb over it. I concentrate only on how the rock feels and the how I am rubbing it. It distracts me for enough time that my feelings subside and I can focus on getting back on task.
It doesn't have to be a stone. It could be twirling a piece of hair or playing with a piece of jewelry. Just something that can be focused on.
Also for at home, when she is feeling upset, you could let her do something she likes to do. Not necessarily all day, but just to let her calm down and enjoy something. Even better, do something that requires thought, exercise, or both. The thought continually takes the mind of the thoughts that are causing the emotions, and the exercise helps get some of those bad chemicals that make you feel bad and increase dopamine which creates the feeling of happiness.
These are what has worked for me. I hope they help. I would also post on a the main Bipolar board or if you don't get the answers you want, post again.
hope this helps -tab
