Beyond Medication Community Group
In this group we will be looking at alternative or supplementary methods of dealing with every day stressors and anxiety. This is for people who do not want to feel as though they do not want to be tied to the medicine cabinet. We will be using such techniques as mindfulness, meditation, grounding, guided imagery, Yoga and other behavioral and self-discipline techniques...
Using Tactile Senses to Deal with Anxiety and Stre

I often find that there are times when I have so much going on in my life that there is so much running through my head that I become overwhelmed.
During these times thinking about doing a meditation or grounding exercise simply feels like it is beyond my ability. Here is one way that I have found to bring myself back into the moment.
I take my shoes off and go outside. I find that the feeling of the hard rough surface of the asphalt or soft cushiony surface of the grass is enough to make my mind aware of the sensation. Then I am able to turn my mind from whatever is troubling me and focus on the sensations in my feet. By rubbing my feet against the surface I'm standing on, I create new sensations and am farther able to be present in where I am and what I'm doing know.
The more I do this, the more aware I become of my surrounding, I begin to notice the warmth or coolness, of the ground, whether it is wet from the rain the night before or just from the cool morning dew. I begin to notice other things as well like the warm glow of the sun against my skin, or the cool breeze as it brushes against my body, then I begin to start to notice sounds, the birds singing in the yard, the passing cars as the go by, the insects buzzing around me and the sights the birds sitting in the trees or on the porch railing, the squirrels scampering across the yard, and perhaps even an air plane trail high in the sky off in the distance.
Then it hits me, I'm present, I've been meditating and I don't even know when I started. I have at least for these last few minutes forgotten what I was anxious or stress about. I usually feel stronger now, more balanced, I can continue on with my day.
Remember all things are not going to work for all people, if you have an experience that works for you please share it.

You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

I really enjoy reading what you write and how you write it...it is like poetry... i can see that you are a natural teacher at heart... simple and descriptive...
so much of how we feel about ourselves depends on our sense self control...
the chemical imbalances we experience cause us to feel out of control... most of what we go through is really a matter of how we are reacting in response to what we dont know is really going on within us...
so ...i believe an awareness of whats really happening to us.... combined with simple exercises ...like the one you just described are truly essential in learning how to regain a sense of self control in our lives...
some of us really dont know how it works or why ...a whole lot of trust goes into this act of blind faith... and can lead to a greater sense of insecurity than i think we all realize...
knowing and not knowing and never really knowing is a big cause for stress and anxiety ... this can build up and do even greater damage to us ...
That in it self is why this NEW GROUP is so vital to everyone of us here...
It will allow us to have a better focus on dealing with the problem at hand... aside from all the social activity in other groups... that can be difficult for some us to concentrate on the real reason as to why we are here at DS in the first place
My eyes and ears are my most misdirected senses these days. Typically they wander off to the sights and sounds between my ears. Birds are my current fave for the tactile meditations. Their songs and movements engage both sight and sound with miraculous grace.
