Are you grieving the loss of a loved one? Whether you lost someone recently or it's been years, grief and its accompanying emotions can be complicated to cope with. Join our online support group to connect with a supportive group of people who really know how you feel. Help is right here.

I joined this site so I could join an online support group. There aren't too many in my area, and the ones that do exist seem to be exclusive to widows/widowers, or they only occur in the evening which is when I work. I will be seeking individual counseling but will have to wait a bit for my first appt. I'm extremely frustrated with the lack of support from my family, the apathy of my coworkers, and random strangers that don't smile back at me or say excuse me in the store. I feel alone. I feel isolated.
I lost my grandfather last year in December, and I just lost my grandmother on Wednesday of this week. I watched both of them die. I want to add that I was raised by my grandparents, and having been a "failure to launch", I lived with them all through college and well into my first big girl job. My grandfather's death was sudden, and it hit me hard. I cried for days and then daily for months. The grief is very much still present, but I had just been learning some ways to cope, mostly art. I felt the push to "create."
My grandmother had been in poor health for years and her mind had been deteriorating rapidly with dementia. My grandfather had been her primary caretaker before he died, and then my aunt took on that role when he died. I had made a commitment to myself that I would spend more time with my grandma. I have so many regrets about not visiting my grandfather more. There are reasons why I could not and reasons why I did not (swing shift, full-time job, and I have a toddler) but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to those pesky emotions (guilt and regret.) Not to mention the fact that I did make time for my grandfather. It just never would have been enough for me.
When I would go see my grandmother, about half of the time she didn't recognize me. Most of the time, she was just confused, but others, she was scared or suspicious or somewhat angry. She seemed to remember me after a little time, and my son always brought a smile to her face. I didn't spend enought time with her either, and I am filled with the same regret and the same shame and the same disgust I have had with myself for the past year, except now it's infinitely more intense.
Last year, I was quick to tears with volcanic lava anger bubbling just beneath the surface. It burst through often. This time, my pain is all on the surface. I don't feel like I can compartmentalize at all. I had to go back to work the day after she died, and I just felt angry. My job does not allow for a lack of composure. I work in an acute psychiatric unit where I am supposed to facilitate groups and teach people skills. I feel like I have none right now. I have attempted to take more time, but that is not an option right now. I don't know how I'm going to get through work next week. I work 6 out of 7 days, and my coworkers have not shown themselves to be supportive.
I know this is all over the place, but I need to get this out. All day today, I have felt awful and weird and a little scared that I might be having a heart attack. I do have anxiety issues, but I have never experienced anything like this. I have been short of breath all day. I have had significant upper abdominal pain that won't go away. It feels like heartburn, but it only goes away briefly with antacids. I have become all of my sharp edges and exploded at my husband over how to take down the christmas tree. Later on in the evening, I did vomit and now I'm feeling better, but that pain has not subsided. It's just underneath my ribcage, right in the center, and my breath is still short. I've calmed slightly. Anyhow, thanks for listening. I feel totally lost and would love any guidance on how to cope at work or at home or even some encouraging words would be helpful.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

It also sounds like you're struggling with survivors guilt as many of us do.... all of the woulda, coulda, shoulda's.....I have gone through this with losses as well
Elizabeth Kubler-Ross was the foremost authority in the world on death and dying and has written really wonderful books that would probably help you to understand the stages we can go through with grief... You are writing about some of them in your post
You also seem to be describing panic..... It's a horrible feeling..... We have a great and active Anxiety Board on here that may be a good support for you
Meditation may help with this..... Colouring can actually help as it uses both sides of your brain... If you need a little time of medically I would see your doctor as he/she can provide a note that you need to be off of work for a bit..
Sometimes it's best to just concentrate on getting through the next small amount of time... a few minutes, an hour, a day.... . Big hug for you and a blessing.....xo
My dad was raised by his mom and her parents. So for him, his grandparents were just like parents. By time I cam along his grandparents were quite old, so I never saw in them what he did. I think others in your life suffer from this lack of perspective as well. They may never see your grandparents in the same way you do. Perhaps only a person like you (or my dad) who has been raised by grandparents will ever understand that.
I have lost both my parents too, dad about 1.5 years ago and mom 2.5 years ago. When dad died it was more than just another parent passing. It was the end of my birth family, the family I was born into. (My sister passed 5.5 years ago) Perhaps you are seeing the same thing now: the loss of your birth family. I have found that nobody really understands this type of loss unless they have been there themselves.
It is soon, perhaps too soon to start sorting out all the emotions. From my point of view, no matter how close you were, how much you visited, how much you did, there is always the temptation to blame ourselves for not doing enough. All of us who have been there are more than willing to give you permission to stop dumping on yourself, but it will not matter until you give yourself permission to stop dumping on yourself.
I do wish more people in your life would give you support, but you can't force this on them. What I have learned is that we need to gauge how much support they can give us, and then try to live within those limits.
As for being exclusive, if you want to be part of this group then BAM! You are!
welcome, and gentle hugs. I know the journey is hard.
In the days since, I have found more support in unexpected places. Like the nurse at the urgent care today who taught me to breathe into a bag and gave me a hug and told me to tell people about my grandparents. And I see what you mean, Pepper, about meeting people where they're at. I lean in too much, sometimes, especially on my poor husband. I expect him to intuitively know what to do, and that's ridiculous. Working on it, working on myself, feeling better with medication and individual counseling on the horizon.
Continuing hugs
I empathize so much with you. It doesn't seem right or fair or normal to be like this. I lost my little sister to cancer a few years back along with other friends and family dying unexpectedly. I don't see the purpose to any of it. I'm angry and don't want to be helped, I just want people to listen, even if they don't understand.
I don't know if this helps. I just wanted you to know that there's others that are like you, that feel ashamed and lost in their own pain. I hope you and I can both find better ways to cope, to grow out of this. I'm still afraid but I'm taking it slow too. Thanks for being honest.
I lost my husband very unexpectedly and I cry every day and the tears often come with warning
All I can say is talk about how you feel
