Hello. I've been with DS since around 2010 but this is my first post in this group. My son (35) and his wife were killed in a traffic accident on September 28. My husband and I have inherited their three children, ages 6, 3 and 8 months. I will be 76 years old when the oldest child graduates HS. The funeral is done and ? ? ? ouch.
I am not sure if I am beyond words or have too many words for any of them to make sense.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

A close friend on mine lost her daughter and went to a bereavement group for mother's for about a year and it helped her a lot.... She still keeps in touch with a couple of people about 4 years now...… xo
There are no answers as to "why?" this happened. But it is your reality now. You have 3 little humans depending on you for their care. In the midst of that. YOU are grieving, and so are they (except the infant, who doesn't understand). I'm praying for a boatload of grace upon you, as this isn't easy. BUT, you CAN do it.
God has given you these 3 little blessings, who will likely keep you young! Of course there will be challenges, raising kids in your 60s & 70s. I strongly encourage you to join every mom-group you can find, so that you build a tight community of friends who are all raising kids together. Who knows, you might meet some of your future best friends! And YOU will have a wealth of wisdom to impart to all those young moms.
Are there any other family members who can help you out? You'll need breaks, just like any other mom.
I agree with others that you need a bereavement support group. Contact your local hospitals, churches, hospice services, and mortuaries. You might also be able to find a support group for grandmas who are raising their grandkids (although many of them will be doing it because of a different situation, such as an adult child in prison or on drugs).
If you are a person of faith, God is right there with you, equipping you for this journey. He will enable you to love, guide, and raise these kids. And if you aren't, I hope you will consider opening your heart and life to Him, who loves you and the kids deeply, who wants to come alongside you, who is the God of all comfort and healing.
I already consider you a hero because you are taking the kids instead of giving them into the foster system. They will always be better with you than in that system. Family is always stronger. If you love them and give them a safe and happy childhood, they'll be blessed. And don't be afraid to ask for help. God bless you.
When it comes to describing death and the unacceptable cause of it, there are words we would rather not say. And I do not wish to offend your delicate feelings with what I write here. It is because the idea of your feelings towards your family is wonderful, for that, I write to you, as it is very clear how much you love them. And I can understand that telling this sad news is with guarded feelings and thoughts of much pain for you, and which I sorrow for you in this time of grief.
Yet there is always hope; so I leave you with God's merciful words of wisdom: For some, all is not complete in mortal life, for marriage and a family of their own have passed them by. But the great plan of happiness and the laws which govern it continue after death. Watched over by a kind and loving Heavenly Father, they will not, in the eternal pattern of things, be denied blessings necessary for their exaltation, including marriage and family. And it will be sweeter still because of the waiting and the longing.
With much godly love, I pray for your peace. There is great power in prayer. Pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ for strength. I plead for you as well.
