A very brillant author killed himself the other day.He was 46 years old and at the height of his career.David Wallaces book was published when he was 24 and this is what I Think happened. My late grandfather always believed in the essence of hard work.He also taught me to save. When I was 7 and going to school,he came down with 3 cans. One of the cans, was for my lunch money, and one was for charity..but one was for savings. He took out 3 coins and lined them on the ground, one he put into his hand. This is a penny,a dime and a quarter,he said. The quarter is always more, but whatever you do in life..dear..saving change is smart. And I still do it to this day. When he died in 1983,he was 97.He had a rich full life and he was happy upto the end.I have learned that success in life isnt all the money and fame..but if you have money at 20 ..it is a dead end to disaster. When I went back to the my old hometown,I saw one of my old classmates. This was the 1990s and dot.com was every where. He just filed bankruptcy. My friend brought a MacDonalds and he thought that it would bring him money..It was nothing but a financial disaster for him and till this day,he hasnt recovered.Macdonalds doesnt put you in your hometown..they put you where the franchise is suppose to be.They put him in a rural area of the country and it was located on a major highway. And it was rural..it was difficult for him to even go to work. And not only that..it was such a small town..the people there were clanish. They just were closed to him and they resented the fact that he was from New York..and the only time that the Macdonalds was busy was during the summer. He wanted to be rich and have a mansion like we all do.But success at a young age is really bad for you because the ones who made it at 20 at the reunion well they are going on their 5 or 6th wife! My old boyfriend was there also..but he and i have got nothing in common. He has got 8 children now and is a widower and I am sorry even tho I ve known him since 1961..this simply wont work. All I can say is that I noticed when someone wins a lot of money and stuff..well they get depressed and that is just the half of it..sometimes people get jealous! When you have success in writing and you are acclaimed..you must be surrounded by people who will be there for you.You must also realize this..some people just do not duplicate the first success and this is evident in some rock stars.Bob Dylan was one of my favorite.I got his first album in 1965.I paid 19 cents for it and it was great..But in 1965,Dylan got married to a very mysterious woman named Sarah. That is all that us knew. And I will say this..Dylans album proclaiming his love for Sarah is much better then the one when he lamented the divorce. And some people come to their full potiental in high school and everyone wants more of them..but after high school they fail to achieve and I see this with some of the young people here.Parents please prepare your children for the outside world and tell them that sometimes the world can be cruel. And tell them that there is life after one of their dreams turns into ashes and they can do and do something else..because sometimes fame can be cruel.Look at Marilyn Monroe. We will never know the truth about her death. It has been 46 years. So cant these writers and talk show hosts leave this woman alone? Cant people realize that Marilyn was just an unhappy woman? When people just use you all the time, how are you going to feel? Lets have Marilyn rest in peace and that goes for Elvis Presley also. And before I go..I want everyone to know this in 1956...Elvis Presley was the FIRST SINGER who raised One Million Dollars for the American Cancer Society! One million dollars! In 1956..the average person only made 7,500 a year. One million dollars was a lot of money and no one in that year matched this, not even that silly Pat Boone!
Your grandfather must have been a very important man in your life also since you are still grieving for him some 25 years after his death at 97. It just goes to prove that we can learn to live with our losses, but sometimes the pain of losing a very special person never goes away.
I guess I'm a little foggy on your mention of the late Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. ??? I don't understand the connection.
I have to say, I disagree with your opinion of Pat Boone being silly. I actually had a school girl crush on him when I was in high school. When I found out he was happily married with four daughters, the crush ended, but I've always admired him for projecting the clean-cut law-abiding image of a loving husband and father, unlike so many in the spotlight.
Again I am truly sorry for your loss and hope you find some peace in dealing with it. I know it is very early in your grief but just give it some time and you will, in time, find a way to accept it.
