I think the best way for a 62 years old to do it is to put a free ad on Craigs list. You can sell yourself as a baby sitter or online tutor. If you choose online tutor you can teach people who need something that you already know. For instance, you know elementary math, can spell and know a lot of words. You post yourself as a tutor and say you can teach elementary schoold kids for $10/hr, or whatever. If enough people see your ad you can at least get a few students.
Do you know how to play an instrument? A person can charge $25 for 1/2 hour for a piano lesson. Maybe more. Get yourself students.
Can you do anything at all for someone else? Call everyone in your neighborhood (Use the WhitePages.com and dot the "reverse lookkup feature. Put in your street name and it gives you everyone's name and phone number). Call everyone and get to know them. Tell them you want to help everyone get better deals on things they need to help everyone save money. You simply take down their needs, how much money they want to spend on it, and shop the Yellow Pages for people to give estimates. The person who finally gets the job will thank you for giving them the hot lead and they will give you between 5 and 15 percent of the job's worth.
You don't have to look for a "job." This is the land of opportunity. I haven't had a "job" in 35 years. I have always lived by my wits and so can you. BTW: do you know a foreign language? Teach that. Students, everywhere, need to pass their exam and will thank you for teaching them enough to do so.
Call everyone in your neighborhood. See who needs a leaf raking, snow removal or grass mowed. Get to know who has a teenager who will perform the task. Put buyer and seller together. Do the same with someone in the area that has a business like a carpenter or painter. Get him jobs by telephone solicitation. Know the businessmen in the area. Telephone one person after another from your home to find out if anyone needs the service. Telephone solicitation can earn you an income. Remember. Finder's fees!
Go to the library. You might find a small business that can bring in a little every week. Education is the answer. You can perform only if you know enough.
I'm 54 and am still learning new skills. I have myself a tutoring business for computer programming, which I taught myself using library books and college text books.
Can you baby sit? Get 5 regular kids. $125 a week for each kid gives you a $25,000 a year income. Day care is in demand. Learn to do it.
Lesson: You don't have to look for a job in America. Create one for yourself.
Write me a message and maybe I can help you further. And remember, 62 is not too old! Simply go to the local Good Will store and buy something that is really underpriced. Go to a consignment shop that you have introduced yourself to already and see if they need that product before you buy it. Transport it to the consignment shop. I know an elderly man who does that for a living. It works. Sell the items at a consignment shop, on Ebay and in the classified ads. You can do it.
How tacky could this person be ? The questions you were asked were appalling - and you're so right - choose words CAREFULLY. While speaking with someone in grief - one who's experiencing a loss under "natural" causes - I can't imagine what one says in a case such as yours. I'd be at a loss for words. To you and anyone who experiences this - I suggest being blatant to whoever asks these questions...When asked if they left you any money, return the question - with "I've just lost someone. Is that the only question you can ask me?" When grief-stricken - we're numb - But I think very sensitive to OTHERS' feelings. Let's not be afraid to tell them WE have feelings, too. Tacky question. Very tacky. So sorry you had to be faced with that conversation.
"those that commit suicide go to hell, it is against God's will to take your own life"
I was so flippin' stunned this person had the balls to say this in the first place, but at my brother's funeral no less? I couldn't even respond I was so flabbergasted. Obviously this person is no longer on my Christmas card list
People can be so stupid and down right rude!
My brother passed in January '07 of cancer, and it was a miserable way to go and miserable to watch. Makes me cherish life and relationships a lot more.
I'm so sorry for your loss...
