I found out at the 20 year anniversary of my brother's murder. It was the law back then. I finally had closure for that. I still had to relived those moments when I went before the board to ask them not to let his murderer out when his parole came up. They didn't but my family has to do it every 2 years. Sucks.
I know this wasn't my dad but it was tragic and my baby brother. Allow yourself to grieve. Talk to a counselor about it. I did when I was in church. I don't know if it is good or bad but I have the feeling that since it bothers you that you didn't grieve enough, that remembering might help with that closure. You need to be in a safe environment with someone you trust. I know the details of my brother's murder. I help clean up his blood. I know that even now it's hard on that day of his murder. I realize that I would remember his birthday but not write anything about his passing. I did for my sister. So I corrected that an express my feelings that he isn't forgotten by family & loved-ones and made a memorial.
I am so sorry about your dad. I know there are support groups for victims of homicide. Maybe that is a place to start.
Find a certified grief counselor and talk to your personal physician. There are low level medications available to help PTSD (I know, I take them) and you and your counselor, together, will decide how much you need to know and work through the horror this has caused you. God bless you and comfort you.
