Hello, this is my first post on this site and the first time I have spoken about my younger son's death publicly since his memorial service in November 2007. When he died I was unable to express my grief. I wasn't able to cry at all for 6 yrs after that. Last year I learned that was a result of depression. I went to a bereavement group meeting once right after his service at a local hospital, but everyone around me was sobbing, and I couldn't shed a tear. I was so wierded out by this that I never went back. Turns out I should have because now I cry for him often and regret things I did and didn't do while he was with me so much so that I am heartsick. I am currently seeing a counselor for depression, and she suggested grief therapy now. So I have my first appointment tomorrow morning at a local hospice. I don't know what to expect, but I know that any forward movement will help. Thanks for letting me share.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Most of us struggle at some point with survivors guilt and beating ourselves up...…. Gentle hug...… We have a good and active depression board on here as well.....xo
I lost my wife of 21 years on Feb 19 2019 after a 14 month battle with lung cancer. I wont say that i know how you feel because I do not. Losing a child is different than losing a spouse so I can't relate to that type of grief. What I can relate to is a loss that is so overwhelming that it can't be quantified.
My depression has been different for me. I was always the rock of our family. Stoic and solid, but now I am the exact opposite. Depression is different for everyone and it can make us do things that we later regret. Just know that you are taking the correct steps to address it.
Seeing a counselor is a wise choice. We sometimes think that we can tough things out alone and a lot of times that will only make things worse. Group therapy is a bit tricky because everyone is grieving differently and sometimes it is hard to relate to the different types of grief. Just keep an open mind and remember that you are there to address the main issue, grief.
I have had better results from individual counseling. I didn't feel very comfortable in the group session that I attended because I was so much younger than everyone else that was there and I felt like "THe odd man out" as a friend put it.
Just know that you are taking the correct steps to address your own individual grief. It can't be compared to anyone else because we are all different. I hope you find success and peace in your journey.
