My mom passed on April 3 at 62 years of age as a result of pancreatic cancer. From the time of diagnosis until her death was 9 months. Our relationship had been strained most of my adult life, and had hit some lows in the past few years. With her diagnosis came a complete change of attitude for her. She chose to embrace what life she had left, and she chose to be loving and nurturing. These are things she had been afraid to do all her life. We spent the last 9 months of her life building a beautiful relationship. It was so hard to watch her final week or so as her body shut down. I love her so much and miss her tons.
While we were going through her end of life, we had so much support. People contacted me daily to check in and I was able to spend a lot of time with my dad and siblings.
Now, it's one month since she's passed, 3 weeks since her funeral. We've all had to go back to our lives. Most people seem to go on with their lives and maybe mom is a passing thought every now and then. I think of her every day, and it almost feels like all that support was yanked away after the funeral. Others move on, but I am still full of grief. I want to talk about it, to talk about her and share memories and laugh and cry...but so many people have moved on already and talking about it with them makes them uncomfortable. I've never lost someone I love before, this is my first time having to process all this. How do I do it? I feel like I have to put on that happy face to the world, but inside I'm a mess.

Woke up feeling very emotional and about to clock in at my place of employment. And can't place it all in writing but not been a good experience with my store manager or his boss. Defamation of my character is a concern. I've been losing appetite and weight. Trying to perform at work to keep myself from hospitalization as a result of toxic masculinity.

My mom passed away 12/31/16 after battling dementia, COPD and other issues (she was 67). Although our relationship was strong throughout my growing up, it did suffer when she started developing problems. We had a lot of arguments and screaming matches. She would blame me for breaking my promise of not putting her in a nursing home, she would put guilt trips on me, etc. But we still loved each other. About 2 weeks before she died, her dementia got worse and she went down hill quick. Christmas Day, me, my husband and brother went to see her and had lunch with her. She enjoyed it. We took her back to her room and I prayed with her and she said the sinner's prayer. I anointed her with oil and she accepted Jesus. The look of peace on her face was bittersweet.
The weeks and months following her death and funeral, I was experiencing every emotion at once, sometimes being in a daze so much, I don't remember my drive to work or home. And for awhile, my mind played "that day" and her funeral over over and over. I couldn't shake it. I couldn't focus on praying, worshipping or listening to the pastor on Wednesday nights or Sunday mornings. I couldn't stand to hear the word mom or talk about her. I couldn't listen to Amazing Grace or How Great Thou Art right now without bursting into tears (and both are two of my favorite songs).
After much prayer, I have received peace about her death. On my way to work one morning, I was changing the channel to one Christian radio station to another and Chris Tomlin's Amazing Grace/My chains are gone was playing. As I mentioned I couldn't listen to it without bursting into tears and thinking about that day I lost her (which was also played at her funeral). But it was as though the Holy Spirit said "Listen." "My chains are gone, I have been set free." Thank you Jesus for saving my mom! Thank you Jesus for healing her! She has no more burdens, no more pain! She is free! (I had prayed and prayed for her to be healed on this Earth but He healed her in the most beautiful way)
I went through a grief support at church. I learned there is no wrong or right way to get through the stages of grief. You may go through one stage at a time or all at the same time and may even go through some of the stages twice. Everyone goes through grief differently. It's not "one size fits all" kind of thing. Greive at your own pace.
It's no doubt that this will be a very hard year but know that there is hope through it all and you will eventually find peace. I know it's not easy to hear things like that and it may not be much of a comfort to you right now, but my pastor told me something a few months after my mom passed away. He said "Part of your DNA is in Heaven now and you are just that much closer to God the Father and his son Jesus and your mom."
Some things change our lives forever..... We go on however life is different....
Grief is something that we don't get over but we work through it one day at a time
A real life bereavement support group can be a really good support
