I have usually done some sort of exercise since the time that I was very young starting with martial arts, weight lifting, basketball etc.I found that when I lost my father in Feb of 06 that exercise helped me.
I spent alot of time in a semi private community pool where I live and I also rode my bikes.
More recently I have felt that I really need to do some of these things more then ever. The reason I think I feel this way is that my father was once a strong Marine is his younger days and seeing his physical deterioriation when he developed heart problems which led to other physical problems was very sad and heart breaking to see. What I sometimes am preoccupied with is I want to finish strong when my life is up.I would like to hear from others who may feel likewise and how did you get past that feeling of becoming ill and being in poor health one day? Thanks in advance

i have seen alot of illness and death having worked in health care for some time. I also lost my partner 4 months ago and watched him deteriorate for one year prior becoming sicker and more dependent all along the way. Some days he was very frustrated but other days he really enjoyed what he still could do. One's world gets smaller and smaller as they get sicker and their hopes and desires become smaller likewise. They may just want to see a certain person or go to a certain place or eat a certain food. Many people just get to a point where they are ready to die and once they are resolved to that, can be more relaxed. When I think of the process of getting older, my goals for my strength and overall health are not the same ones I had when I was 22. I wonder if your desire to want that strength and be in as good shape is that you believe that it will protect from getting weak and ultimately dying like your dad did. Just something to thinkabout. Peace to you. msali

What you said may very well be true Msali.I know that like everyone else I will one day pass on but my goal is to hopefully die peacefully vs. being ill.I think too many people I have known abuse themselves with alcohol, drugs ,and not eating well.I'm not a health fanatic here but try to eat healthy and exercise regularly.I think that our bodies and minds are machines that need physical exercise and care to maintain well. Thanks for your input.

I just went out and got a treadmill a few weeks ago. I am scared that one: if I do not stay fit, I will not be able to live independent for long, and two: I like you am afraid to physically get out of shape and not be able to take care of myself. But, and a big but, my husband excercised, was always physically active, never smoked, ate well, took vitamins and he developed small cell lung cancer at the age of 53. He died three weeks later. So I really don't know. I think we can make sure that we stay as physically fit as we can but then mother nature may have something else in store for us. So I guess I just want to remain healthy by taking proper care of myself while also enjoying life, because the end can come too soon. Hugs to you tonight...
