Bedwetting Support Group
Bedwetting (or nocturnal enuresis or sleepwetting) is involuntary urination while asleep. It is the normal state of affairs in infancy, but can be a source of embarrassment when it persists into school age or the teen or adult years. Find others who are coping with a bedwetting problem and share your experiences and questions.
Well now that it has been almost a year since I have written my original post I figure you are all due for an update.
First I want to start out by breifly reiterating my issue. I am a bedwetter. Or I was. Now that I have kind of gotten over, or shall I say through, it I am more comfortable with being open about it. Ever since I was little I wet the bed. I tried alarms to wake me up, my parents would set their alarm and come wake me up, nothing worked. By the time either my parents or I woke up I would already be soaked. Or I would get up, pee, go to bed, wake up 2 hours later and be soaked. Obviously very tiring and frustrating over time. As I got older, middle school, junior high, high school...even college, nothing changed. In fact it only got worse. I was wetting every. single. night. Washing my sheets every morning and making my bed every night. I tried numerous medictations and even acupuncture which now that I look back on I do not think it did a think, but at the time I was desperate for anything to work. After I gave up on acupuncture (and ran out of money) I took a few months and tried to just push my problem away. I continued to wear depends every night but soon I began to even leak A TON out of those as well. Going away for college approached fast and I literally could not have procrastinated any longer with dealing with this issue. College means dorms. Dorms mean roommates. Roommates mean embarrassment if they ever found out about my issue.
Welp, that was not so brief now was it? Im sure many of you can relate to the above paragraph though.
Literally about 3 weeks before I was leaving for college I finally saw a urologist. Of course the first visit was a money rip off with him basically telling me he would like to do some tests and then asking for $300 (thumbs up emoji) but nevertheless he was a very nice doctor. So i scheduled 3 tests...an MRI i believe...or was it a cat scan...probably a cat scan. The other 2 tests were lovely (sarcasm) tests that needed to be..ya know, down there. Yes, I did take my mom with me and yes she did hold my hand. Ive never had anyone down there picking needles at me much less even seeing that view so I needed support. At our follow up appointment the doctor said that there was something wrong with my bladder. As bad as this sounds, I was relieved they had found something wrong. Something wrong usually means there is a fix. I literally started tearing up with happiness. He told me he wanted to try out another kind of medicine that I had not tried before and that there is a great chance it would not work, but it was the first step (second step would have been surgery). He told me it would take 6-8 weeks for it to fully go into effect if it was going to work so I had to be patient. Immediately I was worried because I was going to be in college WAAAY before that time period ended. He told me to not drink caffeine AT ALL but if i must have some to try and drink it before 4pm.
LET ME TELL YOU. THIS MEDICINE WAS A FREAKING LIFE CHANGER.
I started taking the pill immediately. No more than 2-3 days later i was staying dry EVERY NIGHT. Of course I was still wearing depends every night due to paranoia but I was happy every morning that I woke up and it was DRY. DRY AS A DESERT. It was like I was living in a different world! I did not have to wash my sheets every morning nor make my bed every night!
When I went off to college I was still a little worried that this medicine would soon stop working like all the other pills I have tried, BUT IT HAS NOT. I have finally stopped wearing depends and spending money on them! I wear underwear to bed like any other girl in a dorm. And I have literally washed my sheets twice in the past 4 months I have been up here (only one due to an accident). Now I wont say this is 100% but its safe to say it is 99.999999999%. There have been a few nights I have had some leaks, but i promsie they have been JUST LEAKS, nothing heavy. Out of the 4-5 months I have been on this pill i have only had one real true full on accident. No idea what caused it.
If you have not already seen an urologist I highly encourage it! They helped me get my life back.
Some tips in the meantime:
-dont drink caffeiene. it sounds horrible, trust me i know. but its actually not all that bad! I drink soda that is caffeine free such as root beer or sprite. and requesting caffeine free coffee drinks actually has no effect on the taste!
-if you are going to drink caffeine free soda or coffee make sure you stop after 4pm. after 4pm (ex. dinner) i drink water, lemonade, or juice
-dont drink anything an hour before bed
-im sure you know this one but go to the restroom RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP. also I tend to just try to go to the bathroom more often at night just to keep my bladder as empty as possible the closer to nighttime it gets.
Id love to talk with anyone that is struggling with this issue or has any questions. So message me & ill get back to you as soon as I can :)
Do you keep your mattress protected ?
