As I mentioned in my earlier post I am having surgery for my back on the 18th.I am trying to prepare myself,my family and my home for the surgery and afterwards.I would like ideas/suggestions ways to do this;How to talk to my 3 & 4 YEAR OLD boys and explain why I will be gone away from them for a few days.What items will be the most helpfull after I come home,what type clothing is best for the 1st couple weeks.Is there any way of making the ride home more comfortable[I live about 30 minutes away from the hospital].My husband will be staying with me at the hospital,what can I pack for him to help him pass the time?My daughter will be caring for the boys and the house until I am back on my feet,what can I do to help her prepare for taking over?

Any suggestions would be helpful and appriciated.

One other thing,some one suggested getting a hospital bed for a while has anyone done that and did it help?

When I had my back surgery the day before they said a bed was not available and I'd have to wait unless I went for day surgery. I took them up on the offer. Had it in the morning and was out by 4 pm. Was in horrible pain over the weekend, if you can have someone look after your kids during the first 3 or 4 days that would be helpful. Also have a stool softener, something like Senokot. You DON'T want to be taking a laxative.
For what it's worth, several doctors said I made the right decision going for day surgery, it's so easy to catch an infection if you are there for very long.

I fell and fractured my spine in 3 places about 14 years ago.I went to the ER and was sent home with pain meds and told to rest.They never mentioned going to see a specialist to have anything done for the fractures.

I am having L4 & L5 [possibly L3 also] fused,2 rods,4 screws,and bone growth stimulator.The dr has already tpld me that I would need additional surgeries to repair more damage at T11 & T12 and then at T5&6.

My husband and 21 year old daughter will be caring for the children and house.
