I don`t know where to start,I have back pain from a varity of different diagnosed things that are wrong with me.The first thing is the back injury that i suffered in 1992 from a MVA(5 compression fractures)and migraines headaches(from multiple concussions in same MVA)5 slightly bulging disc`s(possibly the same MVA) and Syringomyelia(diagnosed in 2005,3 syrnix in spinal cord).
This is my problem,I have never had much luck with any of the narcotic drugs that have been prescribed for my pain.And I have tried doing the Epidural injections and they only worked for at most 2 day`s.I went to my GP last week and she suggested that I go to a Pain Specalist to see if they can do anything to improve my quality of life.And maybe get some well needed relief.I was just wondering if anything will really help or am I just wasting time in going to this type of doctor.I would like to have at least some relief even if it dosen`t take away all the pain.Just don`t know what to do,any help any advice?

Hello there and I am so sorry for all the pain you are having. I am a nurse in a pain clinic, ironic I know, but I too suffer with DDD, osteopenia, failed back syndrome, bone spurs and 2 herniation in my back. One in the cervical and one in the thoracic. I had a herniation in the lumbar and has a discetomy in Jan of 07 which failed. In working in a pain clinic, I have seen so many people get better. We do have some that it doesn't help. I have had the epidurals, trigger point injections and have been thru physcial therapy and unforunately, I am one of the ones that it didn't help. I think it is worth your time to at least talk to a pain doctor. There are lots of things other than epidurals that they can do. I have been to alot of doctors and probably had the most support of my pain doctor. I hope this helps..keep us posted..Blessings...missourigal

Well, warm baths help, warm showers and stretching in the shower (trying to touch your toes), one of those mats that are to fit in your chair or couch and it massages you at the key points of pain in your back, heating pad, those Bengay or Icy Hot patches that fit on your back and release the medicine over a long period of time. these are some things that work for me.

I had to same problems for over 20 yrs. no relief from pain what so ever,I couldn't do daily things,my dr finally put me on oxycotin,I was nervous because of all the bad things you hear about it,I tell you what it is a mircle drug,the first time in my life I was not in in any pain every waking minute of the day,I've tried every kind of drug to help with the pain and this one was the key,what would it hurt good luck,god bless

I wish that I could give you some good advice, but I agree with the nurse, I find my pain Doctor very educated and willing to try anything to help me out of my pain. He knows that I do not want to be druged out of my head, so I have asked him to keep me off the oxicotin, just kept my head too messed up and could not do daily activities. So, I am doing those deep injections now, only had one, get my second one on friday, the other ones helped for a year, so I have got to try them. They are very educated people on pain, what is and what is not. I say give it a try and be willing to listen to him. Come to find out, I may have kidney stones on top of the back pain, so again, they are very educated and look at every aspect. Give it a whirl, what have you got to loose? I think that your doc has directed you in the right path. The pain mangament doc has seen many cases that deals with chronic pain and can possible help you better. Good luck.

Thank you guy`s for your replies and advice.I did go to see the pain doctor and he has told me that he thinks that he can help me with some of my neureolgic pain.I have an appointment to get some injections in my thorasic spine,hopfully it will help.He did give me a script for Cymbalta to take for the pain and depression.Since I started taking them in conjunction with the muscle relaxer,I have been able to get some sleep at night.But I still wake up in the night with back pain,it has helped but not all the pain is gone yet.
