This site may prove helpful. It was my online home for many years, pre and post hip replacements. http://avnsupport.org/
I disagree with the doctor that AVN in the humerous means that you will not be able to replace the shoulder. You CAN still replace the joint. The doctor may not want to do it and you may not benefit by achieving pain relief.
I am also having a lot of pain in my shoulders and both were diagnosed with AVN via MRI. My surgeon has left the decision up to me as to the timing of surgery. I have opted not to. I replaced both hips already, pain is persistent and my femurs are dying around the prosthesis. I fear the same would be the result of my shoulder replacements.
Prednisone has been found to be tied to AVN. It is theorized that the medication affects the microcirculatory system, such as the tiny feeder vessels that keep our joints alive.
