Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

My son Jarrett was diganosed as High Functioning Autistic at 3 years old. He started out in the PPCD program at 3 and then was mainstreamed into Pre-K at 4. He did so well, the school reccommended he attend Kindergarden (mainstream) with no special needs assistance. It's now been two months since school began, and my son seems to be regressing. He's constantly introuble for disrupting the class and having severe meltdowns. He's been introuble for biting at least 6 times, and has even hit an aide. Now there are many factors that I have to consider as the cause to these outbursts. 1) My son just turned 5 in August while the other students in his class are all either 6 or turning 6. We we're given the option of holding him back a year beacuse he's so much younger than his classmates, but decided against it. 2) He has no one to one aide in a class of 19 students and one teacher. This new classroom enviroment could be very over stimulating for him. 3) My husband is in the military and constantly gone for weeks at a time, he's hardly home these days and when he is he's at work all day. I and his teacher have noticed that his behavior becomes worse everytime his father is out of town.
At the moment I have three options...Keep him in school and let things playout, Pull him out of school and homeschool him for the remainder of the year, or transfer him to another school which offers a PALS program with a more one on one enviroment for childern with special needs. I am 3 months pregnant and extremely high risk, dealing with this is very stressful and I am completely at a loss as to what I should do now. I really need some advise. HELP!

your son is entitled to a one on one aide, and since it was their big idea to mainstream him then how can they deny him an aide? maybe request an iep meeting and request an aide. but be sure to wait for advise from others here cause i barely know what i am talking about, good luck :)

Hi, well I if I were you I would request a one on one aid because he is getting lost in the large class regardless of his age he is still on the autistic spectrum right? I think that mainstreaming is vital to our kids, but the right supports need to be in place. I know with my little guy Sean who is 5 and started kindergarten this year he spends time in the self contained and then gets mainstream throughout the day with him mainstreaming kindergarten class. We do this so that Sean gets his one on one time in a small class setting then he gets exposed in doses throughout the day to his peers. My thoughts on homeschooling is that your son if homeschooled won't get the exposure that is important to him now, and since you are pregnant and on restrictions how are you going to keep up with all of this? I would demand an aid. Good Luck and Take it easy. Hugs Denise

The problem with homeschooling from my opinion, is that ASD kids have a general problem with socialization and that the young years are opportunities for them to develop those skills. I think to mainstream him with no support into a class when he just turned age might be a bit aggressive, and intimidating. I agree with the others, he needs an aide, and you need to get an ARD/IEP meeting ASAP. Homeschooling is really not as easy as it seems, and if you pull him out of school, then the school might wash their hands of you. Another option may be to put him into a private setting at the district's expense.. His teacher may not have the skills to deal with him, so maybe you just need another K teacher. Good Luck
