I have sensory issues with clothes. I do not like tight or restricting clothes I would prefer not to wear them at all. I like to wear a really big shirt and jogging pants. Sometimes I wear clothes inside out so the labels and seams do not bother me. It is nice to wear a very big shirt that comes down to your knees. I like to.
The shoes. Does he wear lace ups? It is easier to get those tighter. Or stick some extra rip tape on each end of the fastening.

What about wearing jogging pants (you know the skin tight ones that show everything and do NOT look flattering at all, lol) under his regular clothes. Yes, it will be hot in summer, but might work for very difficult days. How about skin tight undershirts under the outer shirt? My daughter wheres a skin tight leotard on her bad days under her clothes (which, if that doesn't bother him that it's kinda girlie...he could do that too...less hot then aboved mentioned items). Also, he wheres same thing over and over. Figure out what he likes and buy multiple of the SAME thing in different colors. I know MS is cruel (I'm a teacher), but has he ever tried explaining it. For example, my daughter is EXTREMELY sound sensitive. She can also appear "normal" at times (PDD-NOS) and "off" other times. I tell her to explain it this way...when someone is yelling tell them to times it by 100 and that's what she hears. Most kids get the idea and are supportive. He could compare it an itch that you HAVE to scratch and then explain for him it 100 times worse and will bother him until....whatever he does to make it stop (itch, pick, whatever). I find that kids can be more forgiving than some of the adult teachers/principals when educated on something. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of trying some sort of undershirt. I will give it a shot. Sometimes, a shirt he has been wearing for months, will suddenly be uncomfortable and a shirt he never liked, will be fined. I just never seem to know. I thought I finally found a style he liked from Old Navy - I was about to go buy one of every color, and then he decided he did not like it. It is easier in the summer with shorts and t-shirts, but winter is tough. Sometimes he has to wear t-shirts to school because that is all that he has to wear at the moment and he is cold. He won't wear a sweatshirt over it, so he has to be cold. I am hoping that the therapist will be able to give him some ideas on how to cope with other kids being "mean". I know he is overly sensitive, so sometimes it is not them being mean, just maybe not as friendly as he would like them to be. He wants to be friends with everyone and I tell him that is not possible,. He should stick with the people he knows are his friends. It has been a long struggle trying to find the right help for him, but I am hoping to be on the right track finally. I will keep you posted.

do they have a social skills class? we do at my son's school. he gets 30 minutes with kids like him every day. he also has a mentor. a lot of the speech therapy now, depending on where you live, can incorporate social skills.

He is in a social group - but they only meet once a week. He has the guidance counselor at school that his very helpful. He goes there when he feels overwhelmed. I am planning on having a meeting with the school after he meets with the therapist a few times, as I am hoping she can help with some ideas. He has an IEP, that was recently adjusted to give him fewer services because he was doing so well. Now, I may need to get them back.

Very simple suggestion: Take your son to a store, and allow him to choose the shoes that make him feel the most comfortable. I would suggest this for picking clothes as well :)

My daughter isn't the one on the spectrum, but I suspect sensory issues. I can't get her into jeans or heavier pants to save my life. It is okay when she is still in little girls clothes, but we are almost to women's sizes now. I just take her to the store with me that helps sometimes. You should see me shopping for her hands up all shirts and in the waistbands of clothes. It is so frustrating.

What types of skin sensitivity does he have? Does he actually have dry itchy skin? Is he sensitive to the cold, or to heat? If so, have his thyroid checked, preferably the free T4 and free T3 as well as the TSH, which is typically the one that is first tested.

The guidelines from the leading thyroid associations have recommended in 2012, that the thyroid be checked upon a diagnosis of depression.

Does he eat a well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water? Or is he picky about his food as well?

I agree about taking him to the store. Also, if he can find just one friend who will help him choose clothes that are socially acceptable, it could make a world of difference. Would it help with tightening the shoes if he wore thick socks or more than one pair at once?

Are there any religious or social organizations in your area that can provide a sense of belonging or community?
